How do I KEEP duplicates on Kobo?

Obviously this doesn't happen too often, but there's several cases where I have multiple editions of a book, and want to have them both on my Kobo.

For example, I have two copies of THE FOX by Sherwood Smith. I had the old edition on my Kobo already. When I sent the new edition to the Kobo via Calibre, the old edition vanished from my Kobo. (And the metadata on the new edition got all confused, like it/the Kobo had lost track of where the book started, etc.)

Changing the title of one edition works, but I don't want to do that.

Is this possible?

You change the name of new version so it's not the same as the previous version.

I did mention that in the original post. I was wondering if there was another way of doing it.

You could try adding a subtitle to one of them. No idea if that works, though.

It's also possible to keep an epub and kepub version of the same book, but I'm guessing you don't want to do that either.

A subtitle won't work as the filename will still be the same. So it would overwrite the copy already on the Kobo.

The only other option is one as ePub and one as KePub to keep the filename the same other then the file extension.

How about changing the name template to include the sub title?

This would be the way to go. Having a quick look in the Calibre Preferences and "Sending Books to Devices" button, I would add {id} to the filename.

Example:

{author_sort}/{id} - {title} - {authors}

Do I need to do something to set/add the id of the file? Because I copied your example into the 'save template' bit, and it didn't work; Calibre removed the first copy of the book on my Kobo.

But I didn't do anything to the books beforehand, so possibly I'm missing a step?

I would suggest checking the Kobo driver configuration to make sure that template is present there. A change to the save template won't affect how books are sent to your Kobo.

I modified the template on my system. I then imported an older book to my Intake library and then sent it from my Intake library and from my Main library. Both copies were found on my ereader with the ID tagged to the end. See attached image. The size difference is since the Intake library copy was not edited. so metadata, cover image, etc. were from factory.

Ebooks/{author_sort:sublist(0,1,&)}/{title} - {authors:sublist(0,1,&)} - {id}

Please note that you will need to resend any books to have this change made. Also the sublist bit just use the first entry in author_sort and author to keep file/path length under control.

No, it goes into the Save Template field at the bottom of the first page of the Kobo driver config. See the attached image. If you have your Kobo connected, you can get to the configuration from the Device icon dropdown or if you have the Kobo Utilities plugin, you can click on the Configure driver menu item.

See attached image and add the ' - {id}' to the end of the save template.
