Kindle Paperwhite 1 (EY21 / B01D), FW 5.6.1.1 - “Invalid Update File” when trying to

Hello everyone,

I’m trying to jailbreak an original Kindle Paperwhite 1 (2012).

Device information:

* Model: Kindle Paperwhite 1 (EY21)
* 3G model
* Serial prefix: B01D1501
* Firmware: 5.6.1.1 (2689890035)
* Never jailbroken
* Not registered to Amazon anymore (registration no longer possible)

What I tried:

1. Installed the WinterBreak files (apps, mesquito, themes, etc.).
2. The experimental browser can access Google, so Wi-Fi works.
3. However, it cannot open the WinterBreak2 page (page load error / likely TLS issue).
4. I then tried the legacy downgrade approach.
5. Copied the official update_kindle_5.4.4.bin (191.5 MB) to the Kindle root.
6. Also tried 5.4.4.2.
7. “Update Your Kindle” reports “Invalid Update File”.
8. Keeping USB connected and forcing a reboot (holding the power button for about 30 seconds) produces the same result: “Invalid Update File”, then the Kindle reboots back into firmware 5.6.1.1.

Questions:

* Is downgrading from 5.6.1.1 still possible on this exact hardware revision?
* Is there a different downgrade path for the EY21 / B01D 3G model?
* Is there another currently recommended jailbreak method for a never-jailbroken Paperwhite 1 running 5.6.1.1?

Downgrading is done by forcing reboot using power button and without disconnecting from your computer, not using Update Your Kindle UI option.

Download the firmware on couple of different devices and check / compare the file checksum on each. Also check the file extension and make sure stupid browser didn't change it from ".bin" to something else which some of browser do.
