I recently used the Access-Aide plugin to do pretty much what you mentioned about chapter titles. I set the alt text for each chapter title image to the chapter name/number visible in the thumbnail and then ran a regex to change the p to h3 and add the alt text to the title="" for generating the ToC. Still a bit of manual effort but faster than opening each image individually.

Which actually brings me to a nit with the Access-Aide plugin in that if an image is used 40 times in an ePub, it shows every instance. Images used for scene breaks for instance.

Real state. In my laptop, there is no plenty of room, and Code panel gets shorter when Book Browser/TOC panel is in one side, Preview panel on the other side, menus on top, Search and Replace panel on the bottom.

The size of my display is not big, and since I have not the best sight, font size is big. I do not have two displays, as many may find useful.

So, another panel on the top or the bottom, whatever you want, makes the real space to work on the code to a minimum.

I do not mind to read thru several line in vertical, since I attend one error each time. So it is not a problem to have the last column to span several rows, and having it attach to the same space the Preview panel is, it saves me a lot of room to Code View.

Yes, that was done by design because the alt text for each can be different. In fact, when Access Aide was first released I mapped each image to the same alt text value, and people complained that the same image was used at the start of multiple chapters and the alt text therefore had to be different for each use of that image.

Separator images might be better if you set an initial alt value in advance using regex, then tweak only the ones you want. Or set that image's internal metadata using a good image editor and the metadata you set will initially be used to set an alt value.

But if this does what you and theducks want, then I will extract that bit into a new plugin and we can tweak it as needed.

Personally, since the Access-Aide plugin already has the functionality and I do try to have my ePubs accessible so I would continue using it, I'm not sure I use make use of a plugin to handle that subset functionality.

What I've been doing is to use two search and replaces based on the preceding terminator (was it a </h3> or a </p>) to set the alt text between scene break image and chapter header image for those books where the same image is used for both. A bit of a kludge but works for me.

Where the chapter header itself is an image is a bit more fun but I've already described my workflow.

At some times, I have to ask myself, just how many saved searches can one person need...

Re @celiapgt's positioning of error panel.

BeckyEBook gave me a 'patch' to Sigil's .ini file (attached), the patch creates an extra dock site between the CV & Preview panels which I use for the ToC & Clips.

Could something similar be used to do what celiapgt wants.

For those interested in libjxl and libavif support. I finally got the qt jpegxl plugin to build. I have not tested it yet but wanted to note the plugin alone was over 5Meg in size, which is anywhere from 5 to 10 times the size of most of the qt image plugins because of the size of the codec needed.

Building libjxl was in general a real pain as it literally pulls in libpng and libjpegturbo, as well as brotli, zip, etc etc. It even includes a jni interface and wasm interface. So a way overly bloated build to say the least. Definitely not a codebase we want to add to Sigil

I should have time to see if the plugin will actually work tomorrow or Thursday. But code signing a third party out of tree build of a qt image plugin that no epub currently uses nor is supported by chrome/electron/webengine which makes up a large part of e-readers, is not something I endorse, but it is worth experimenting with to see how involved it all is, and whether it will work.

No idea what that patch file does, BeckyEbook will know.

As for the space argument, why not just use the Sigil View menu to hide the Validation window completely until it is needed then rehide it? 90% of CV editing is not done using the Validation window anyway.

When it is time to validate, double-clicking on an error in that window should open up CodeView to the correct spot (or nearby) so having just a few less vertical lines in CodeView should not matter, especially if you shrink the height of the Validation window first.

Alternatively, adding a second monitor works just fine (or use an old tv) as does using the OS virtual desktop features with just one monitor. I do the latter all the time my small screen laptop.

Hi All,

For those interested in jxl, the third party qt plugin does actually work to show jxl images in the Image tab for editing. Of course there is no support in QtWebEngine until Chrome both adds it and Qt pulls in that version of chrome.

But it does work.

I will test the third party avif plugin next. It is supported in QtWebEngine right now (Preview) so QImage support (Image tab) is all that is needed.

Okay I finally built the libavif binaries and its yuv requirement libs statically and linked them into the libqavif.dylib qt extra plugin.

I can confirm that with these built and in place Sigil's Image Tab will happily show and edit these files.

The biggest issue is size. libavif because of all its codecs now comes in at a whopping 10MB for a single plugin:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 kbhend staff 10618472 Aug 5 12:47 libqavif.dylib
-rwxr-xr-x@ 1 kbhend staff 5374184 Aug 5 11:57 libqjpegxl6.dylib

Which is twice the size of the libjxl plugin which in turn was 5 to 10 times the size of the other built-in qt image plugins!

So this would add about 15meg in size to an already big Sigil binary and would massively bloat the Sigil codebase as both libjxl and libavif are huge projects at the source code level.

This really is something for Qt itself to undertake.

I think we/Sigil just wait until there is more demand for this feature and that Chrome/QWebEngine will actually support both.

As it stands, I am thinking of only creating plugin binaries that interested users would have to download and install themselves, and not be officially supported by Sigil.

Of course on MacOS that would completely break code signatures! So perhaps not.

Quite the mess to build.

Small QoL thing:
When detecting duplicate file path in the OPF manifest, rather to display a single dialog for each of duplicate file path found, group them into a single dialog with a list.

Often when their are duplicate file path, is not just 1 or 3, but more dozens, which means you have to frantically close a dozens of dialog in a row to finaly get acces to the ePub.

@un_pogaz

Please post a non-contrived example of an epub with dozens of duplicate file paths in the manifest?

How on earth did they get generated in the first place?

This really should be a rare event. And if something is generating this type of error systematically, it really should be fixed.

It a old ePub, that was generated by a unknow way.

I agree it should be rare, and it is, but my guess is whatever generate duplicate file paths, they won't just duplicate one or two files, they'll duplicate every HTML.
So when their are duplicate file paths, it recuring that we can have dozen of them. Have only some few part and not the entirety is more the exception than the rule.

Removing the duplicate paths in that sample ePub was relatively easy since one set of paths had an id starting with html and the other had an id starting with id.

However, that was just the start of the mess. name=, size=, clear=, naked spans, filenames containing spaces, etc. A calibre 1.12.0 conversion from a Microsoft Word docx file going by the information in the .opf file (1.12.0 was released in November, 2013, AFAIR).
