Editing metadata of books (title, author) doesn't change metadata on device?

Hi everyone, I'm new to using Calibre as I've just bought a new ereader for the first time in over a decade! I've switched tothe Pocketbook Verso Pro BW from the Sony PRS T2.

Many of my books' metadata is formatted strangely, but what is most important to me for indexing is author name and title (and release date, though I haven't played around with editing this). I can't edit the metadata of the books on the device while it's plugged in so I've been matching them to the same books in my library that I've fixed (aside from me editing author and title, they're the same files). When I unplug the device, the titles and author names haven't changed.

What am I missing? Thanks

Generally speaking, in calibre, edits made to the metadata are not actually embedded in the file itself but rather into a separate metadata file (*.opf) (NOTE: if you select a book in your library, and type "O", it will open the directory on your harddrive where the book is stored, and you'll see the .opf file there—alongside the book file and the cover image). In order to embed the data in the file, your best bet is to re-convert the file (e.g. if your file is an epub, re-convert it into epub using calibre's conversion functionality). If you do so, the new file will have embedded those metadata changes, and that can be transferred over to your e-reader with your desire metadata formatting.

(if you are working with ePubs, the calibre plugin "Modify ePub" will also accomplish the metadata embedding task)

The simplest way to update the metadata in the format files (.EPUB, .AZW. .PDF, .DOCX etc) is to use the Embed Metadata tool, for .EPUB and .AZW files the Polish Books tool can be used, it has more bells and whistles..

Embed Metadata and Polish Books are standard features, you will have to add them to a toolbar/menu; OR use keyboard shortcuts; OR access them via the All Actions menu (Ctrl+F1), see attachments

You may have to remove the books from your device and resend the copy with the updated metadata before your device will update the metadata.
