Amazon DRM changed?

Has Amazon changed its DRM in the last day or two?

I was able to download a book to Calibre yesterday with no difficulty. The book in question was fairly new - published in May 2026. It wasn't, AFAIK, DRM-free; indeed, I'd be surprised if it was.

Today, I tried to download another book (one published in September 2025). It came through as KFX-ZIP, not KFX. I was unable to open or convert it.

Yes, I am using the latest alpha DeDRM, obtained here.

If you've been removing the DRM from Kindle eBooks on your Kindle, it's most likely that Amazon changed the DRM on your Kindle.

The only way to do it now is to do it using the Windows Store version of Kindle which needs Windows 11. Then you need the latest version of DeDRM which is 10.0.28.

Thanks very much.

Yes, I have been loading books via my Kindle. Fortunately, I am using Windows 11.

I wasn't aware of DeDRM v. 10.0.28, had to go hunting fort it, and added it to Calibre. I then installed the latest Kindle for PC (1.0.18632), obtained from the Microsoft Store.

I eventually tracked down my downloaded book to C:\Users\peter\AppData\Local\Packages\AMZNKindle.A mazonKindleReadingApp_m1sc522ngdk36\LocalState\Cla ssic\Content\B0DS571XMN_EBOK.azw .

Unfortunately, trying to add that to Calibre was not successful. The attached image shows the result.

You have to go back to the GIT where you got 10.0.28 and find the directions. You don't do it the way you used to. You have to use the software that comes in the ZIP to sort out the eBooks so DeDRM and KFX Input can finish the job.

In other words "RTFM, Peter". And that's fair enough... except that I must be looking in the wrong place. I can't see any instructions there. I managed to find someone else's instructions, written several months ago, and followed them. They didn't work with the DeDRM version that I have.

Oh, well.

Thank you.

We're not allowed to give instructions here, unfortunately. The most I can say is now you have to run the archiver (bundled with the deDRM plugin) via command line and it will transfer the books to a newly created folder, from where you add them to calibre.

Yes, that's a fair point, and one that I'd forgotten.

Thanks for the pointer. That's what I did, but it didn't give the expected output.

There are some helpful suggestions in the discussions section on Satsuoni's github site.

I've done the simple thing. I've created a .bat file that's in my path. It's called KFX.bat. So all I do is run a command prompt, type kfx and the process is started. After it's done, I copy the eBook's over to calibre. It's that easy.

Is there a version of this process for Mac, or is it Windows 11 or bust? I currently use an old Voyage to download purchases to, and then transfer to Calibre and de-drm. Because the Voyage doesn't update to firmware that prevents de-drm it can still download ebooks without becoming KFX-ZIP.

No Mac version. I think Epubor had a Mac option, but I don't know anything more about it, or if it's still working.
