The solution is to use calibre with the ACSM Input plugin. That way you will still be able to download your DRM infected ePub/PDF. If you have DeDRM, you can disinfect your ePub/PDF with just adding the ACSM file to your calibre library. The advantage to this is that you don't have an extra copy sitting in your ADE library, the ACSM file is automatically deleted upon successful download to calibre and the DRM is removed.

I use this setup and it works very well.

I doubt it will change. If it does, there will be a lot of people who will no longer be able to read DRM infected ePub/PDF. There are a lot devices out there that have some version RMSDK that will never be updated. If the DRM is changed, it will be a big deal.

Remember the huge backlash when Adobe updated the DRM?

What development? There haven't been any updates in a long time, and hopefully it remains that way.

I could not deauthorize my ADE (Mac) so I followed directions to uninstall it and then delete the support files (including the all-important authorize.dat file). I reinstalled and then found I could not authorize my Mac through ADE using any of my Adobe IDs. This was the ByteBooks issue discussed above (though it took me a while to actually grasp/internalize the issue/solution). I registered at the site using my existing Adobe ID and, when I returned to the ADE authorization, it worked. (Yes, the A-ha moment.)

If your ADE is already authorized and things are working for you, the advice (earlier in this thread) to simply not change anything is sound. ("If it works, don't fix it.)

But if you need to authorize ADE on a new device OR de-authorize an existing ADE installation, you'll need the BookBytes account as they are now handling the ADE authorization and/de-authorization processes.

- Use your existing Adobe ID for the BookBytes registration (to de-authorize an existing ADE installation).
Perhaps it is something I am doing (or not doing) but just using the same email address in both the old (using Adobe ID) and new (using the ByteBooks) devices just does not work for me.

I have a new MacBook and tried to authorize ADE on the new machine. I created a ByteBook account using the same email address I used on the old machine, and was told that I had successfully authorized the new machine. But I can not download Kobo books on the new machine. I keep getting an E_LIC_ALREADY_FULFILLED_BY_ANOTHER_USER error,

When I ask what that means I am told by Google

you are trying to open an eBook license (.acsm file) using a different Adobe ID or account than the one originally used to download the book. It also happens if you downloaded the book without signing into an Adobe ID first.

Since this is the first time I tried to download the book I assume the first part does not apply, but since I am signed into an Adobe ID (ie, a ByteBooks ID) the second does not seem to apply either. I guess that this means I will have to stop using Kobo as a book source if I can not get this resolved.

It is extremely frustrating.

I suspect the issue is that you created a new ByteBooks account using your email address instead of using the Already Have An Adobe Account button to transfer your old account. If you created a new ID on Bytebooks, it will have a different internal urn:uuid collection than your old Adobe ID even if you used the same email address when creating it.

If you have already used an .acsm file with the old registration, it will not work with the new registration and you will have to download a new .acsm file to use with it.

Edit: At least that was what worked for me since my old Adobe ID used an email account that has not existed since 2004. It was easier to create a new account with a valid email address than to jump through the hoops to authorize the old ID at ByteBooks.
  1. Create new ID at Bytebooks
  2. Open ADE under Windows and enter ctrl-shift-D to deauthorize.
  3. Re-authorize with new ID. Test by downloading an .acsm file from library.
  4. Open calibre and then Preferences =>Plugins=>ACSM=>Customize. Use ctrl-shift-D to deauthorize
  5. Close and re-open ACSM customization dialog
  6. Click copy authorization from existing ADE account.
  7. Test using the same library .acsm file.
  8. Connect Kobo ereader, delete activation.xml from the adobe-digital-editions folder.
  9. Close and re-open ADE. Authorize Kobo ereader device. Copy library book from ADE to Kobo.
  10. Safely eject and the book opens on the Kobo.

First, yes, that is exactly what I did. And second, thank you I will give this process a try and post the results.

No success so far. I have created a new email address and tried to register a new ByteBooks account, but have never received the OTP code needed to complete the registration.

I have sent an email to what I assume is support at Byte Books asking for further information, but nothing so far.

I guess I am just going to have to give up. It has now been almost 2 days and I have not gotten an OTP code for registering and I have not received a reply from Byte Books to my email. Fortunately someone posted that Calibre will do the same download as ADE. I will have to see.

Thanks for the information If I ever hear from Byte Books I will try again and post the results, but it seems pointless if I can not get a response from Byte Books.

Create a new email address using Outlook or Gmail and see if either works. It could maybe be something between your existing email address and Byte Books.

I'm also having issues with this transition. I created a new account at ByteBooks using the same email I used in my previous Adobe Digital Editions account, but if I used the checkbox to transfer my existing Adobe account, it would tell me that the user did not exist. I created a new ByteBoons account without that checkbox, and unsurprisingly it doesn't open my previously bought (and already fulfilled) books: it gives the same message as above, that the licence was already fulfilled by another user. I sent them a message with all the details, they replied asking for screenshots. I'm now waiting.

I had changed my email associated with this account, so I wonder if this is why ByteBooks didn't recognize my account as existing.

I'm not extremely worried as I always disinfect my files as soon as I buy then, but it would be good to have the option to re-download my books if I need to.

I'll report back once I get a reply.

If you re-download the .ascm file, it should work. The old files are now linked to your old account with it's different urn:uuid so you will need to download them again.

I tested this with a couple of library books and books from Kobo. Once I downloaded an ePub using an .ascsm file with my old Adobe ID, I could not use the same .acsm file with my new ByteBooks ID. The same applied if I downloaded the book with my ByteBooks ID where an attempt to download with my Adobe ID gave the same error.

If you have a Kobo ereader and authorize it with ADE, it will add a file called activation.xml to the adobe-digital-editions directory in the root of the exposed partition. If you look at that file with a XML editor (just to make it easier to read), you will see two lines of interest (values in those lines modified just a bit). You can also get the same information from the Windows registry in HKCU/Software/Adobe/Adept.
Code:
<adept:user>urn:uuid:cf16d607-54cf-412d-8725-b961ef1c9a9e</adept:user>

I'd tried, too, and the first time the checkbox was also saying to pin that option to use the previous ADE account, but that was pink-highlighted and didn't really allowed to check the option; trying it again worked.
Thanks @DNSB, because later it needed to re-download the acsm file I was willing to have on device.
Also, now I know that I can buy from Google Books, export them as a epub or PDF acsm file, and copy it to the device (using, in there, the mail from both adobe and ByteBooks, and the Bytebooks' password).

Reporting back:

Library books indeed would not be an issue, but I lost access to books I had bought and fulfilled via ADE previously.

The solution was to reach out to the vendors and explain to them what happened. They were super quick to answer and very understanding. They manually reset the DRM license for each book, so that they could be downloaded again with the new ByteBooks ID.

Hope this helps someone!

For the vendors I tested if I did not download a new .acsm file, I got the "E_LIC_ALREADY_FULFILLED_BY_ANOTHER_USER" trying to open the book in ADE, using calibre's ACSM plugin or directly on the one ereader I have access to that supports using .ascm files. If I downloaded a new .acsm file, the book downloaded without issues on any of the three.

If your vendor does not allow you to download a fresh .acsm file for a previously purchased book, it could be a problem. For me, that would be a indicator to not use that vendor in the future.

Many ACSM files expire in less than a day, so only buy where you can download again.
