[Project Announcement] Custom OS for Kindle 4NT Looking For contribuitors!

Hi everyone!

I am currently developing a custom OS framework tailored for the Kindle 4 No-Touch (K4NT). My goal is to breathe new life into this classic device and give users total freedom over their e-readers.

What is currently included and working on my device:

Dual-Boot / permanent boot option: Easily switch between the stock Amazon software and this custom OS.

Custom Recovery: A built-in recovery system to guarantee peace of mind and prevent bricks during installation.

Jailbreak Tools Integration: Built-in utilities to manage your device directly.

App Store & Book Store concepts: A standalone interface to manage apps and books.

Sound Engine: Audio feedback and sound support directly through the interface.

Current Hardware Compatibility:

Fully Tested: Kindle 4 No-Touch (K4NT). The interface is currently fully mapped to utilize the physical side and D-pad buttons.

Not Tested: K5, K6, Paperwhite, Oasis, and other touch-based models.

Looking for Contributors! 🤝
Since I am focusing my development on the hardware limitations and button layout of the K4NT, I need help from other devs in the community to scale this project.

If you are a developer and want to contribute, I am looking for people to help with:

Touch Engines: Mapping touch inputs (/dev/input/event*) so this can run on newer Paperwhite/Oasis models.

Sound & Media Players: Enhancing audio capabilities and lightweight media playback.

General Testing: Trying it out on other legacy Kindle models once the initial files are ready.

Once I finish my final round of local testing on my K4NT and clean up the repository, I will share the source code and installation links here!

so, we noticed on devices now it has like k4nt, a security for not letting you put custom firmware so, we are currently focusing on fixing that. so the link im gonna give when it will work the fix.

FIXED you need to have kindletool and run this command (get the zip of noahostest.zip) command:KindleTool create ota2 -d k4 \

we fixed it. buut it installed but it did nothing so we are fixing the code

It must be asked: Do you have real-world embedded device development experience, or is this a vibe coded/LLM assisted project? Is there a public code repository?

i do have an real world device a kindle 4 no touch. no we dont have a public code repository.

we are fixing the update.bin. we are trying to make a KUAL version. we see for a day if it works! :> so we are making this a good project, today in 18/07/2026 we are going to make some more addings and remove things why? this causes bugs. we are too developing a kindle testment app for PCs for testing bins updates and models, some things are simulated and others not. bye!

The K4 is a wonderful device, but I'm wondering how you would get this part to work, given that it has no speakers or headphone jack?

As far as I know, the K4NT does not have any audio support (no speakers, no headphone jack, no Bluetooth support, etc.) out of the box. There was at one time a project that attempted to add support for the USB sound adapter to older Kindles but, again, AFAIK, it went nowhere. Amazon's software assumes that you have 512MB of RAM to support VoiceView and the older Kindles only had 256MB.
