I've not heard of any program other then Books that need extra code to allow embedded fonts.

That extra file in the "Miscellaneous" segment -- next to the OPF -- is what I was referring to. I've found that trying to deal with Apple's arrogance just in the OPF can have some unexpected results in tables.

This not at all about Calibre, either the reader or any other component. It's about Apple's refusal to work with existing standards (if you're old enough, you may remember the hard-formatting of 3.5" floppy disks that was incompatible with existing formatting standards and actually reduced capacity, and the less said about choosing the 6809 processor instead of the 6805...).

I was around in those good old days. Virtually every manufacturer had their own variant of formatting floppy disks and there were no standards as such. Sure, you could argue that for 3.5" floppy disks, IBM with their SD, DD and ED disks were somewhat of a standard. Though then I have to remember Microsoft's software distribution using DMF format to squeeze a bit more data on a 3.5" floppy disk, Amiga's format, one oddity that varied the rotational speed to allow squeezing more data on a disk (much like Apple's 400K/800K floppies) which was based on the Victor 9000 design though it didn't use the Victor's GCR encoding.

The existing standard in 1982 (and used by pre-Mac Apple machines) was "soft formatting by machine establishing the disk format, with concentric rings" — sure, lots of variations, but the method was similar AND there was no manufacturer lockin, not even by IBM! — but Apple insisted on hardcoding its spiralized formatting onto the 3.5" disks while simultaneously abandoning the 5.25" disk (admittedly, the hardware change was going to happen...). No non-Apple machine would read those disks; an Apple machine would not read non-Apple disks. That garden wall has spikes and barbed wire on top. (Rusty barbed wire.)

It also extends to things like "what's the order of segments in a MIME-encoded e-mail message that includes binary attachments?" issue, in which Apple has refused to comply with a formal standard (don't have the RFC reference chain handy, this has been a problem for over a decade), the "forked" file-storage system, etc. To say that this makes data recovery a nightmare is an understatement... especially when dealing with an estate's data, so the originator isn't around any more...

That's assuming the heirs are interested in your stuff. No one in my family would be interested in what I have on my computer.

But the tax authorities would... and the only defence your executor/heirs may have against a significant tax bill may be in old files on the computer, in this day of "scan it and toss it."

Probably I'm dense, but I don't understand what you mean.

He seems to be suggesting that after you pass, the tax authorities might get interested and want documentation. These days, most people have their documentation on their tablet, computer, phone, whatever so your heirs might need to access your computer.

On a somewhat related (and to me, silly note), about 3 years ago, one acquaintance's father passed away. All his information including his will was stored on his computer. The only good thing was that he had not encrypted his hard drive so we were able to access it and retrieve his information. I really can't say why he did not save a physical or stored off the computer copy of his important documents and information or leave an envelope with a third party with his password information just in case.

Do you pay any taxes other than at point of purchase? Do you have a lease or mortgage on your apartment? Any savings outside the traditional brick and mortal banks? Since from your posts, you do not have a spouse or equivalent, there is unlikely to be the issue of any pension income that will be directed to a spouse.

For instance here, most of the Canadian population is paying income tax. When you pass away, the government expects an income tax filing for that year to be filed by whomever is acting as executor of your estate. The retired portion is likely to be collecting Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income supplement plus any pensions from work or from contributions to Registered Retirement Savings Plans, most of which which have a maze of survivor benefits.

I personally feel that I will be totally uninterested in paperwork after my demise but would prefer to leave things as tidy as possible for my survivors.

A friend died a few years back and only a neighbor knew where her brother lived. When he came out, I was asked to help look for a Will on her computer (really old, IMHO scrap value), Not only was there no will on the HD nor any flash or floppy, there was not even the day to day clutter most of us have from using a computer.

The courts had to make a decision and I had to dig the computer out of the to be scrapped pile) and appoint the brother as executor

Yes, there is an income tax, but it's filed automatically based on your salary and you only have to file it manually if you have additional income sources or tax exemptions. As I have neither of those, there's no need for my heirs to file anything. No lease, mortgage or savings, and no will (my lawful heir is my sister and her children, and that's fine by me). So there's no documentation on my computer that would be important to anyone after my death.

Around here, you have to file your T1 each year and after your death, a final T1 needs to be filed. While Revenue Canada is sent the information on income, they likely will not have your deductions beyond the default ones. For instance, one acquaintance who is wheelchair bound is able to claim their personal portion of the cost of wheelchair, other mobility aids and other non-covered medical expenses once the annual personal limit has been exceeded which results in a decent sized refund each year.
