Searching for 6"-7" E-Reader with Buttons: Best for Annotations, Translation & KORead

Hi everyone,

I am currently looking for a new 6-inch or 7-inch e-reader with physical page-turn buttons and would love to get some advice and input from the community. I have a technical background, prefer an offline-first data approach, and place high value on a clean, structured workflow for notes, annotations, and exports.

Context & Background:
I am based in Germany and recently got back into reading after a long break. My first book back was Hermann Hesse’s Demian, where I encountered complex philosophical passages and vocabulary I wasn't familiar with. I also frequently read psychological literature to better understand and reflect on my personal health.

Because of this, I am looking for a portable e-reader that makes it easy to:
1. Highlight and save meaningful passages/quotes to review and reflect on later in detail.
2. Look up unknown words and translate sentences seamlessly while reading.

Key Requirements:
• Hardware & Ergonomics: 6" or 7" screen, with physical page-turn buttons being a must (or at least highly desirable on ultra-compact devices).

• Highlighting & Export: Straightforward marking, saving, and exporting of quotes (ideally structured for Calibre or Markdown/Obsidian).

•Translation & Dictionary: Instant lookup and translation of individual words or phrases.

• Philosophical Context / Explanations: Ability to get deeper explanations for complex sentences (via KOReader plugins, AI tools, or Android apps).

• File Management: Offline-first mindset, tightly integrated with Calibre.

• Tinkering: Open to custom menus, tweaks, or alternative reading software (like KOReader).

---

Current Contenders:

Kobo Libra Colour
- Pros: Excellent ergonomics, IPX8 waterproofing, physical buttons, color screen for highlights/covers, great KOReader support (including potential AI/translation plugins directly on-device).

- Cons/Doubts: The Kaleido 3 layer makes the black-and-white background slightly darker (requires more front light), no native Android apps.

Onyx Boox Go 7 (or Go Color 7)

- Pros: Open Android system (direct installation of apps like DeepL, ChatGPT, Obsidian), solid hardware, physical buttons, microSD slot.

- Cons/Doubts: Higher standby battery drain due to Android, potential overhead/complexity for a pure reading workflow.

BOOX Go 6 (Gen 2)

- Pros: Very compact (6"), crisp black-and-white screen, full support for the BOOX InkSense stylus, open Android for notes and apps.

- Cons/Doubts: No physical page buttons (touchscreen only), smaller screen real estate for larger layouts or PDFs.

PocketBook Era (or Era Color)

- Pros: Premium build quality (metal frame), excellent Carta 1200 B&W screen (or Color version), 4 physical buttons, outstanding KOReader integration for structured Markdown exports (.md).

- Cons/Doubts: Noticeably heavier, no active stylus support, Linux-based (no native Android apps).

Musnap Ocean C

- Pros: Ultra-thin design with faux-leather back, physical buttons, Android 14 for maximum app flexibility.

- Cons/Doubts: Difficult availability and expensive import/shipping to Europe, lack of local EU customer support.

Hanvon Clear 7 Turbo+

- Pros: Ergonomic Oasis-style design with side grip and buttons, fast Android 14, E-Ink Carta 1300 for crisp B&W contrast.

- Cons/Doubts: Import-only, requires manual setup/tinkering for Western workflows.

Tolino Vision Color

- Pros: Hardware-identical twin to the Kobo Libra Colour (buttons, ergonomics, color, stylus support), widely available locally in Germany.

- Cons/Doubts: Stock software is much more restricted than Kobo (installing KOReader is significantly harder), same darker Kaleido 3 background.

---

Open to other suggestions!
Given my location in Germany (regarding availability and warranty) and my focus on a clean annotation/translation workflow, which device or ecosystem would you recommend? I look forward to hearing about your experiences!

I have nothing to comment re: your workflow (I don’t annotate), but just wanted to mention that the Musnap Ocean and Ocean C are very much available on Amazon.de so “Difficult availability and expensive import/shipping to Europe” may not be a significant con.

Whether it’s a better or more reasonable choice than Boox Go 7 for a similar-ish price is another matter, especially re: potential customer support.

(As far as I can tell, Boox sucks when it comes to hardware problems - not just broken screens but anything they can even remotely go “user caused” about - but at least they can be contacted and they do offer repairs for their devices, albeit not cheap, and can offer genuine assistance when it comes to software/firmware issues. I’ve no idea how Musnap compares there or how easy they’d be to contact directly for service if needed.)

Thanks a lot for the heads-up! The fact that the Musnap Ocean and Ocean C are now directly available on Amazon.de takes the import hassle and expensive shipping completely out of the equation!

Your assessment regarding customer support is also extremely helpful. I've read quite a bit about Boox's hurdles when it comes to hardware repairs and screen damage, even if their software support seems fairly decent. Buying the Musnap via Amazon provides a solid safety net, at least for the return window, even though long-term support and firmware updates from Musnap naturally remain a bit of a question mark.

Thanks again for the valuable feedback—it definitely helps me weigh my options between the Boox Go 7 and the Musnap!

Regarding Onyx: I don't own one and have not systematically researched them. But, I've seen posts here and there mentioning that they "churn" their hardware (i.e., release e-readers constantly but drop support for the older ones just as constantly). Similar posts mention they don't update their Android version and when they churn from one generation to another of a device, they still don't necessarily update the Android version:

https://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/20...eady-hates-it/

Again, I haven't systematically researched them.

Hello, thank you very much for your reply!

The Onyx Boox Go 7 was initially my top choice. Unfortunately, on Reddit and other forums I joined today, I've read a few negative things regarding their customer support.

Quoted response: "(As far as I can tell, Boox is a disaster when it comes to hardware issues—not just broken screens, but anything remotely attributable to user error. At least you can contact them and they offer repairs for their devices, even if they aren't exactly cheap. For software/firmware issues, on the other hand, they offer real help. I have no idea how Musnap compares or how easy it would be to contact them directly if needed.)"

I might head over to a MediaMarkt store soon to check out some 10-inch readers in person just to see how the size feels.

As for a two-device setup, that's something I've also considered.

Currently, my shortlist has shrunk and I'm torn between these devices:

• Kobo Libra Colour N428B – revised hardware ("Refresh")

• PocketBook Era

• Musnap Ocean

• Onyx Boox Go 7 B&W – customer support makes me a bit worried

Best regards,
Nils B.

I've read that the Pocketbook Era has relatively poor contrast. I've never seen one in real life, so I have no personal comments to offer about this.

The Era I saw in a local shop looked fine. I was tempted as the button arrangement seemed nicer than Libra, Libra 2 or Sage (which I have).

Unlike CRT, Plasma, LCD, OLED, DLP etc, there is a noticeable variation in contrast, eveness & colour of front light etc for the exact same model using the exact same eink panel.

Unlike all other display technologies you can't just swap a replacement panel. There is at least a vcom setting or it can be washed out or worse.

Are you looking at the Pocketbook Era Lite? I have both and I very much like my new Lite. The screen has been upgraded to 1300 and contrast/clarity is much improved. It is also very noticeably lighter than the previous non-Lite Era. The OS remains the same and Koreader runs well on it. I love that you can set Koreader as the default reader for the device. But with the multiple Korerader plugins available a large library is easier than ever to use. The body of the device is also the same and I was able to remove the snap on cover from my non-Lite to the Lite, saving me some decent cash.

I do have to say that as someone who has bought not one, but two Boox devices since last year, I do very much like their devices!

And both have been absolutely fine to me both as hardware and firmware go - with the only issue being that, as it turned out, I couldn’t really adjust to needing frontlight all the time with a Kaleido 3 screen (I got the Boox Go 7 Colour Gen II first), but as I liked everything else about it, I ended up accompanying it with the Go 10.3.

I didn’t buy from Boox direct though but from/via European companies - I guess that’s one thing about Boox, out of all the various Chinese Android e-reader brands, they are the most likely to have their devices sold through a variety of European storefronts.

People do caution about Boox devices being fragile though - I mean, any non-Mobius eInk screen is, and can break in various ways that wouldn’t harm a modern smartphone or iPad (I guess bending/flexing is a big one) but the thinner the device, the more potential there is for breaking. And as far as I know, no eInk device manufacturer considers screen breakage to be a warranty issue. And dedicated e-readers certainly break, too, if the at least weekly “why does my screen look like this, what do I do now?” posts in e.g. Kobo or Kindle subreddits are anything to go by.

With Musnap … from what I’ve gathered, their hardware is very nice, but I’ve seen a handful of reviews on Amazon etc where people say that it can just “brick” itself randomly - it’s fine, fine, fine, and then one day it’s not. Which can probably happen to any electronic device, to be fair.

Speaking of fragile. There was a Reader called The Cybook from a company called Bookeen. Lots of people had the screen spontaneously shatter.

Thank you everyone (Quoth, jkrzok, Yapyap, JSWolf) for all the great insights!

@Yapyap & @JSWolf: That’s a very fair point about screen fragility. You’re right that glass E-Ink panels across all brands (Kindle, Kobo, Boox) are inherently delicate. Buying through EU retailers/Amazon definitely provides a solid safety net for returns and consumer rights. Also, the heads-up about Musnap units occasionally dying out of nowhere is very useful—long-term hardware reliability is definitely a priority for me.

@jkrzok & @Quoth: The PocketBook Era is sounding more and more tempting, especially with KOReader running so smoothly and the praise for its button ergonomics.

I have a few follow-up questions to help me make the final decision:

1. For PocketBook / KOReader users: How seamless is dictionary lookup and highlight export (specifically to Markdown/.md files) in KOReader on PocketBook? Does KOReader run as smoothly on PocketBook as it does on Kobo?

2. For Kobo Libra Colour owners: Is the Kaleido 3 background noticeably dark/grey when reading black-and-white text indoors, or does keeping a low frontlight on completely solve it?

3. For Boox Go 7 users: What does battery life look like when reading purely offline with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth turned off?

Thanks again for all the help—this is super valuable!

Best regards,
Nils B.

On my Libra Colour, I keep the frontlight about 10% higher than on my Sage and the screen does not look grey to me.

Since I have the colour one, it won’t be exactly the same as for BW - my eyesight is such that I need more contrast, and I can’t comfortably read on the colour screen indoors without the frontlight on, at around 50%.

So that said, and - I haven’t used it a lot, since I don’t really like the colour, heh - I’ve generally got at least 15+ hours of reading time out of it (wifi off during reading, on only when actively browsing for or downloading a book; frontlight on). I’ve never let it go lower than 20%. I’ve set it to turn off after 48 hours of idle time; otherwise - when I’ve been actively reading on it - I just let it go to sleep/standby.

I’d estimate the BW version to get at least 20 hours of actual reading time.

What this means in days or weeks depends on how many hours a day you read.

Also, and I assume this goes for any Android device, you would expect it to use a lot more battery initially - downloading updates and at first you’d likely spend some time learning what the settings do, tweaking them to preference, etc. This is something you won’t need to spend time on later, but it chews through battery faster for a day or two after major updates as it needs to optimise stuff behind the scenes.

(Regarding updates: I don’t think any of the Android-based eInk device manufacturers provide Android updates to their devices as a general rule. Boox has done it once, I believe, for some flagship device, but in general, you’ll be stuck with the Android it comes with. This doesn’t mean the devices will stop getting updates as such - Boox provides their own firmware updates for several years at least. And all in all, the purpose of these devices is to be an e-reader, so even if they get “too old”, you can still just read sideloaded DRM-free files offline without issues.)

Thanks a lot to David (DNSB) and Yapyap for the detailed responses!

@DNSB (David): That's really reassuring to hear! Setting the frontlight just ~10% higher than on the Sage sounds like a very easy workaround to completely offset the slightly darker Kaleido 3 background.

@Yapyap: Thank you for such a comprehensive breakdown on the Boox Go 7! Getting around 15 hours of active reading on the Color version (at 50% light) and an estimated 20+ hours on the B&W model gives me a very realistic picture. The heads-up about initial background optimizations/battery drain after updates was super helpful as well.

I have one specific question left regarding PocketBook:
- For PocketBook (Era) / KOReader users: How seamless is dictionary lookup and highlight export (specifically to Markdown / .md files) in KOReader on PocketBook compared to Kobo? Does KOReader run just as smoothly on PocketBook OS?

Also, if any other owners of these devices (Kobo Libra Colour, PocketBook Era, Boox Go 7, or Musnap Ocean) could share their general experiences based on my specific workflow requirements (offline-first setup, Markdown/Obsidian note export, dictionary lookups, and reading ergonomics), I would really appreciate your insights!

Thanks again to everyone—this community is amazingly helpful!

Best regards,

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update to let you know that my search is over!

I ended up ordering the PocketBook Era Lite after finding a really great deal on it. In the end, the combination of the sharp Carta 1300 display contrast, lighter weight, physical page-turn buttons, and the seamless KOReader / Markdown integration suited my workflow best.

Thank you all so much for your time, insights, and shared experiences! This community was immensely helpful in guiding my final choice.

Best regards,
