I buy 100% of my books from Kobo not including the freebies so for me it is well worth it. The number of books I've gotten for .89 cents is simply crazy including one I just bought. This years total of all books gotten both discounted, free and full price so far is 51 books.

I just always waited for a code to release, so never had more than a month's gap between when my "current" year expired and when I renewed. I don't think they ever sent me an email offer. I usually got the codes from this thread.

I may decide to renew. Looking at savings vs cost is a good way to think of it. And I do buy most of my books from Kobo.

Sadly, the VIP-discount codes shared here never worked on my Kobo store.

It's been increased since before April. They only notify you when your VIP is close to renewal.

Since most my purchases these days are on non-discounted books, it wasn't worth it to me :/

I'm really screwed by missing the last VIP discount code from last December

I'm grateful for this thread because it prompted me to check my account and thus confirm that my December renewal will be $20. As for non-discounted books, I've noticed more of these and my most recent purchase was one such, but I don't mind too much as I got Bonus Points for it, and my understanding is that non-VIPs don't get points at all anymore?

My non-discounted books tend to be nonfiction and (for me) relatively more expensive, so the points accrued go toward getting other books via redemption, the VIP purchase price of which I can then factor into considering if my $20 renewal is economically worthwhile.

It's basically $1.66 a month, Prime membership is more than that, cable certainly is as well as any subscriptions to channels you might have. Add in the discounts plus points that can get you one free book a year and it really doesn't feel too bad.

When I've been paying $10 or less for a year of VIP, $20 for a year is a lot.

The list of free books hardly ever appeals to me, so it's not a consideration.
What I valued the most was the 10% VIP discount. However, my favourite publisher has (in the recent past) gone to no discounts, so I have less and less reason to continue VIP membership.

TLDR, my reasons for keeping VIP membership have increasingly dwindled.

The one book is very limited selection. id rather use the $20 to buy two books I actually want directly.

I read
Quote:
plus points that can get you one free book a year
as referring to earning points that can accumulate sufficiently to "buy" a book, rather than the free book automatically offered on renewal. The books offered as a renewal gift are indeed overpriced at $0.00
