Which to me, means it wasn't bricked. IMO.

I thought it did something to the bios (or something else that would make the computer useless as a computer for Windows, Linux, ... .

To me, if the computer or device is not usable as is, it is bricked. Another example would be a Kobo ereader where the µSD card has failed.

Can you recover a bricked device? Yes. I did that with quite a few wireless routers back when the alternative firmware was first made available. Remember DD-WRT, FreshTomato, OpenWRT and their kin? That you are able to recover from the bricked condition is not really relevant. Do most people have the skill set to recover the device and their data? Again, going back decades, I remember shipping out EEPROMs for Zyxel modems and several of the people I shipped to had tried to burn their own EEPROM and failed.

This is where I think our opinions differ. With the internet, "bricked" devices can be recovered; some rather easily, some take some effort.

To me saying something is/can be bricked can be similar to fud. Earlier it was reported that Windows could be "bricked", no mention of recovering from the "brick" or how difficult it would be.

And some devices just can not be recovered even if you are willing to spend a lot more money than anyone is likely to do.

One of my co-workers purchased a Microsoft Zune 16 in late 2008 as a Christmas present for themselves. Bounce ahead to summer, 2010 and their Zune died. No local repair possible and one site that said they could possibly repair it wanted a non-refundable deposit that amounted to $125US (compared to the new price of the Zune 16 at $160US) plus the co-worker got to pay for shipping both ways.

Sure, and that is what I would consider bricked.

Thank you to everyone for the discussions. I will use my old PC/laptop/giant tablet, (whatever you want to call it) for Word, Excel, organizing photos, etc and stay off the internet with it. The Tap 20 is heavy, but it has lasted longer than any computer that I have ever had. My first was a Commodore, I think?

I appreciate all of the help. Now, I will try to download the new Windows App for Kindle on my new laptop with Windows 11, even if the kindle app is buggy. I found 7 books that I purchased in 2010, but somehow I did not get them put on Calibre with K4PC v. 2.4.0 (70904). Hopefully the new Windows App for Kindle will help. Thanks, again!

The Windows store Kindle app has updated yesterday. The new version is 1.0.22326.0. I've download a couple of KFX and I was still able to remove the DRM.

I hadn't tried to even open/run the app in a while due to it having issues launching on my main PC, and thus I hadn't been able to use the msix tool to remove DRM yet. I had been just assuming it was due to W11 being installed with compatibility checks bypassed and Amazon being stringent about it. The system is a Haswell E on an X99 and no TPM 2.0, so it's got multiple official incompatibilites. I tried again today after K4W got updated to 1.0.22326.0 and it fully launched and loaded my library, including the most recent purchases. Tried Sats DeDRM v10.0.29 and it worked for them. They aren't newly published so I don't know how it would fare there.

Hmm. Kindle for PC 1.0.23620 (August 26, 2026) is not syncing: "Unable to connect. Please check your network settings and proxy connection."

It's not showing books that were previously downloaded (and which I'm able to import into calibre). They were not importing a few days ago.

Before I try uninstalling and re-installing, anybody having this issue?

I'm seeing the same thing here. I picked up 2 free books to test. Both K4W3 1.0.23620 and K4PC 2.9.1 (712006) are popping up the same error. OTOH, Kindle for iOS is still working.

I'm using Kindle 1.0.23620.0 and I just downloaded an eBook no problem. But what is a problem is the app cannot see any new eBooks and I cannot send from Amazon to the Kindle app.

I am also seeing the same message on two different Windows 10 computers running K4PC 2.9.1. Yesterday there were no issues with either computer and new ebooks would download. But today no new books will show up.

Same issue, unable to connect on 1.0.23620. I was trying to refresh my KU filter/view as I had returned some books to grab new ones.

Finally resorted to signing out and then back in which then did refresh the view and let me download the new books but once I did that, if I tried to refresh the list again, I had the same unable to connect again.

I killed 40 minutes on line with Amazon customer service and have been bumped up 3 levels so waiting for a call back likely tomorrow.

A reinstall or a sign out/sign in will download any new books but that is not something that I want to do a couple of times a week.

What I find most humorous is that the error popup on K4W is copied from the one for K4PC though it ends early.
