Hi everyone,
I want to jailbreak my old Kindle Paperwhite 4 (Model PQ94WIF) to use it as an e-ink dashboard for Home Assistant. It's currently running on a super old firmware: 5.10.1.3. I've already blocked OTA updates (using the folder trick), so I'm safe for now. However, I'm a bit confused about which method to use. Kindlemodding.org highly recommends WinterBreak for almost everything and labels the old factory firmware methods as "Legacy". On the other hand, a friend told me that for my specific older firmware, the classic Factory jailbreak (with the downgrade bin file) is way more stable and safer than trying to force new exploits like WinterBreak. What is the best and safest route for FW 5.10.1.3 as of 2026? Should I stick to the old Factory way, or is WinterBreak fine for this version too? I can hardly find any tutorials for the legacy jailbreak in 2026. I have experience flashing Android phones, so I actually think I could handle a custom flash if there's some documentation available. Thanks for the help! |

If you are willing to update to 5.10.3 you can use kindlebreak https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=338268 which is one of the easiest kindle jailbreaks ever. Afterwards, you can downgrade if you like.
The factory methods were better than nothing, but they involve very large firmware files and are specific to the kindle model. In general (very few exceptions) you can not downgrade kindle firmware, so you can not use a factory method on a higher firmware and I don't remember any firmware methods for 5.10.x and higher. |
