A Calibre-adjacent tool, but for your highlights instead of your books

Most of the library-management conversation here is about the books themselves — formats, metadata, covers, sync. I haven't seen much about the highlights inside those books, which is its own mess once you've got a few hundred titles: Amazon's Kindle Notebook page is basically unsearchable, and if you've also got Kobo highlights in the mix, there's no single place to see any of it.

Built Highlight Vault to be the "Calibre, but for highlights" — pulls everything into one local library you can actually search and browse:

Filter by genre, colour-label, or date read across your whole collection at once
Star favorites, group into manual collections independent of genre
Export the lot to Word, CSV, or JSON
It's a separate tool from Calibre, not a plugin — runs as its own local Windows app, no shared database or conflict with your existing library setup. Free tier has no time limit; there's an optional paid Pro tier (autosync, Notion/Obsidian push, more export formats) for people who want it, but the core library management is free forever.

Genuinely curious whether people managing large Calibre libraries would want this integrated more tightly (e.g. reading highlight data alongside Calibre's own metadata), or whether keeping it separate is actually the right call.

Personally I don't highlight, but I imagine heavy calibre users would want it integrated with calibre (as a plugin, maybe?), while those who don't use calibre would not. So it's a pretty tough call.

Just curious, would it even be possible to use this tool with a calibre library? I mean, if one reads mainly with the calibre viewer and highlights there, not on a Kindle or a Kobo.

There's a read-only Calibre library integration. Basically point the app at a Calibre library folder to pull in its series info, tags, and cover art for matching books. Nothing in the Calibre library is ever changed, and Calibre covers now show up for Kobo/CSV-imported books that don't have an Amazon cover.

That's duplicating what's already in calibre. It would be better to be an add-on rather then duplicate what already exists.
