Poke 3

I have a Poke 3 from a few years ago. It's not that old. It works beautifully, however the battery seems to be weak. It only runs for a few hours until it wears down and needs a new charge or two in the same day. The battery life was never great, even when new, but it's in a bad state now.

I don't want to throw it away because other than the battery, it works great.

Any suggestions what to do with it? Is it sell-able? Seems a waste if I can't do anything with it.

You should be able to replace (or get someone to replace) the battery.
It's a thin one (in comparison to many batteries).
Normally batteries are known by their dimensions in mm and they are written on the case.
You can definitely find the right size out of China.
But normally the connector and the BMS (the little circuit board on the battery) can be custom.
It is possible to just replace the cell itself and reuse the BMS.
This is best left to a service person if your are unfamiliar with it.

Of course you could reuse it as a wall weather station/news/schedule.
You could just leave it plugged in.
A battery-ectomy is a little bit more complicated.

I checked out battery replacements for the Poke 3. Not as 'easy' as some other devices. There are some parts that need to be unsoldered. It's a job. A new battery is about $40 and if I find a shop to do the work perhaps another $100??? I found a new unopened Meebook M6 which costs less than that so I'm getting it. I just can't bear throwing this Poke 3 away even though there is some battery bulging in the back. I'll pack it in the Meebook box and keep it someplace but I can't see myself throwing this in the trash. Keeping it plugged in probably not wise as it gets hot and the battery is starting to bulge a little. 6 years is not great, but there comes a time for us all. I'll keep my eyes open for a better ereader when the Meebook needs a change.

$40 for a battery is too expensive.
Doing the job for someone familiar with this is not a big deal.
I'd do it for a beer, but you're not close.

Thank you for your help. Next time you're here locally, stop in. I'll give you the beer plus you can take the Poke 3 for your own (as long as I still have it).

Bulging batteries are a fire hazard. I would not put it in a cardboard box and store it somewhere. If you really want to keep it, it should be put in a fireproof container, otherwise take it to a recycling or hazardous waste disposal center.

Definitely do not recharge it.

dcarvil is right.
You can unplug the battery (I believe) and recycle the battery.
Unfortunately that is throwing away the BMS and connector too.
I don't encourage people to try to salvage the BMS as they might short the cell.

Well, I uninstalled everything, deleted my accounts, then did a factory reset. I'll bring it to a cell phone repair shop tomorrow. I'll ask how much they want to replace the battery, but I'm expecting to just drop it off and let them recycle it. I know about bad lithium batteries. But it seems such a waste.

My Meebook M6 is brand new. It is very very similar to the Poke 3. I believe that it's discontinued so the device and battery are probably already a few years old. If this lasts another 6 years I'll be happy. But it is so similar to the Poke 3!
