New Windows Kindle app announced; Current Kindle app unavailable after 30/06/2026

This is infuriating. I have K4PC and it's been fine for years, now I get the click here to update thing. So I did and hit the "your system is 10, f' off" message. Why in God's name do I need to be running 11 to read a !#@@$^ book?? What about Windows 10 prevents me from displaying text on a screen!?? Sorry, I'm just super peeved about it lol.

Is there any workaround? A particular version that can be made to work? I don't care about DRM removal. I just want to be able to read books I've purchased at Amazon.

I CAN tell you that randomly quoting people's non-relevant posts is not the way to go about getting help. The problem is that no one here is allowed to give you specific help in this matter. It is against forum rules to give explicit drm-removal instructions.

There is a "quick replay" diaglog box at the bottom of the page and a "new reply" button below the "karma" button.

Strictly speaking, in most cases, you are not buying an ebook. You are buying a license to read an ebook with all kinds of restrictions.

No one anywhere (that I know of) is calling anyone who gives instructions on how to remove DRM a criminal. It's just against the rules of MobileRead to do so. There's a big difference. The owner of MR simply does not wish for this place to become the center of the universe for all things ebook DRM removal. Surely that's not difficult to understand?

My fault. I misinterpreted. Though, I still don't think anyone is really calling someone a criminal just for giving instructions.

Yes! That was the point of my post. I guess I wasn’t clear enough. Instead of “Buy with one click” Amazon should be saying “Lease”. At best you a buying a lease to read. You are not “buying” anything. If I Buy something, I own it.

To make things even more confusing: you are really not even "licensing" from Amazon--they don't own the copyright. You are sublicensing from them--if their license terminates, you will lose access to the book. (This actually happens from time to time on Amazon).

So, I guess it should say that you are buying a sublicense.

(Frankly, I think they are all playing fast and loose with the US Supreme Court's first sale doctrine--you can't "license" a physical book--but no one else agrees with me.)

For what little it may be worth, Amazon/Microsoft seem to going to a rapid update policy for the Kindle 4 Windows app. An update to 18320 on Sunday and then an update to 18632 today.
