The CFW is why the device is even popular to begin with!
They want to charge a higher price for international users and a lower price for the mainland market,
so they're saying that the more expensive international version won't be blocked.

However, as we saw with various phone manufacturers and also vendor locking in USA market (for example with the Samsung variants), this creates a confusing situation where a phone might be labelled as X, but in reality there are lots of subvariants. So rom enthusiasts kept fighting this, but also moved away from those in their purchases.
So this will be the same thing again where the Xteink X4/X3 brandnames are tarnished with that confusion.

Xteink aren't exactly Nirav Patel. They're just a random small Chinese company that got VC money and squandered its community core.

My suggestion is to refocus on the Delink project. It's basically the same hardware: ESP32 tied to same size screen, just a bit more bulky at the moment due to being DIY. You can even run Crosspoint on it.

Got mine a few days ago. Immediately installed crosspoint 1.3, spent literally a whole day loading my library (nearly 7,000 books), upgraded to crosspoint 1.4 which was released while I was loading books, and have been enjoying playing around with it since.

Very obviously not going to replace my Kobo as my primary reader. If nothing else, the lack of a backlight makes reading in bed awkward. And the frequent page turns mean it's not great for reading while eating lunch (or anything else that needs two hands).

But, damn, it was nice to have something in my pocket I could pull out and read while I was sitting around at the doctor's office.

I could do that--but my eyes start to cross and itch if I spend more than a few minutes on my phone. eInk is much easier on them.

Please don't assume everyone has the same needs and capabilities you do.

You can get pretty much any formatting / fonts with it and customize it even further via CSS.
Hi! Your project is still in development?

Asking bcs I will get my xteink in August and for me the most important thing is a good formating options (my fonts and adjustments to make the text better).

I don't like fumbling with an expensive phone at the ticket barrier while towing a suitcase, and I'm always worried about the battery running out halfway through the journey. A small eInk device seemed the answer to both those problems. And I can confirm it works perfectly. I set a screenshot of the ticket to be the cover image and I don't even have to turn the X4 on. I've also just ordered an X3 to see if that would work as well while being even smaller.

Plus it's genuinely useful as an ereader - you can just shove it in your pocket and take it anywhere without thinking about it.
this is the exact use case i had in mind when i wished years ago that someone would produce a 3 to 4 inch device.

not only do i have all my loyalty cards on my x3/x4, but i also have wifi QR codes, the bar code for my costco card , my AAA card, libary cards, just about anything credit card sized.

i don't like the original firmware and switched over to CrossPoint. however, there is one thing about CrossPoint that is lacking...it doesn't support the png image format in its image viewer. currently, it only supports bmp format. waiting for the day when png is supported so that i don't have to convert to bmp every image i want to display.

Yes, I'm still maintaining the project. Everything is working just fine for X4 and X3 devices, and it's feature complete.

If something is missing, please submit an issue on GitHub.
