Performance fix + configurable PDF page DPI for print replica conversion

Hi jhowell,

First of all, thank you for maintaining this excellent plugin.

While converting Japanese print replica books (PDF-backed fixed layout KFX), I ran into two issues and would like to propose fixes for both. A patch against v2.25.0 is included below.

1. O(n^2) slowdown in check_consistency() with PDF-backed books

get_pdf_page_size() creates a new pypdf.PdfReader (and re-flattens the page tree) for every page reference. For a 336-page print replica book, decode_book() takes over 30 seconds, nearly all of it in this loop.

The patch caches the PdfReader per PDF content (keyed by a content fingerprint, since each resource fragment may hold a distinct bytes object with identical content). Results on the same book:
- get_pdf_page_size across 336 pages: over 30 sec -> 0.18 sec
- decode_book() incl. consistency check: over 30 sec -> about 11 sec

2. Configurable DPI for PDF page rendering (currently fixed at 150)

convert_pdf_to_jpeg() is limited to 150 dpi because calibre's page_images() does not accept a resolution argument. 150 dpi is quite low for technical books - small text and ruby annotations become hard to read.

The patch invokes pdftoppm directly (using calibre's bundled poppler binary when available, falling back to page_images() at 150 dpi on failure) and adds a "pdf_page_dpi" conversion option (default 300, clamped to 72-600), e.g.:

ebook-convert book.kfx book.epub --pdf-page-dpi 300

I set the default to 300 in the patch, but keeping 150 as the default would of course preserve existing behavior.

Verified on Windows (calibre 9.8) and Linux with two Japanese print replica books.

Happy to adjust anything if you'd prefer a different approach. Thanks again!

You should be doing your testing with the latest version of calibre.

I will take a look at your patches an incorporate something similar in the next release of the plugin. (I am working on other projects so it may not happen immediately.)

Update:

There have been a lot of changes to the plugin since version 2.25.0 which your patch is based on.

In cases where PDF pages are composed of just an image that image will be extracted with no loss of resolution. And if not the DPI for PDF pages that need to be rendered as images has already been changed from 150 to 300. I believe that those existing changes should be sufficient. If you need a higher DPI you can alter the value of PDF_TO_IMAGE_DPI in resources.py to whatever you want.

I still need to look into the caching issue that you raised.

Japanese vertical layout issue with KFX Input 2.33.0

Hi jhowell,

Thank you for maintaining the KFX Input plugin.

I found a reproducible issue when converting Japanese vertical novels.

Environment

- Windows 11
- calibre 9.11
- KFX Input 2.33.0
- Kindle for Windows (Microsoft Store)
- MSIXKFXArchiver

Issue

When converting Japanese vertical novels from KFX to EPUB, the generated EPUB has:

- primary-writing-mode = vertical-rl
- page-progression-direction = rtl

The CSS also contains:

writing-mode: vertical-rl

However, the text is rendered in very narrow vertical columns with a large blank area on each page.

The issue occurs with both:

- Convert books -> EPUB
- From KFX -> EPUB

I tested multiple Japanese novels and they all show the same behaviour.

This does not happen with older EPUBs created from AZW3.

Unfortunately I cannot provide the original book or converted files because they contain copyrighted material.

Thank you.

I am unable to duplicate this problem. I have tested with a variety of Japanese books that use vertical RTL formatting and they render correctly for me after conversion to EPUB when viewed in calibre's e-book viewer.

Without a way to duplicate the problem there is nothing more I can do.

I did find a similar issue with several image intense KFX books. When I looked at the code extracted by the From KFX tool, it looked more like ePub3 Fixed Layout with viewport and everything positioned absolutely on the page.

Spoiler:

That is the result of converting a fixed-layout book with pop-up panels. The odd formatting with "app-amzn-magnify" is as specified by Amazon for Creating Fixed-Layout Books with Image Pop-Ups or Virtual Panels. Using "From KFX" to produce PDF from that type of book is generally the best option.

While it is possible that the Japanese books LISAS1999 is converting are fixed-layout, I assume that would have been mentioned if that was the case.

--------

I am willing to investigate the Japanese vertical issue but I would need more information in order to do so. Knowing the ASINs (10 character identifier) of one or more books that exhibit the problem would be helpful. Screenshots showing how a page renders correctly in the Kindle app and incorrectly in the calibre viewer after conversion might provide more information. Most useful would be a converted EPUB with the copyrighted text removed by using the ScrambleEbook plugin, assuming that it works for Japanese language books.

Version 2.34.0 - 22 Aug 2026

KFX dictionaries can be converted to EPUB format using either the From KFX toolbar action or the CLI. Due to their large size the import and conversion of dictionaries can take a long time. Amazon-specific dictionary markup will be added. DRM removal specific to KFX dictionaries is required prior conversion.

When converting comics that contain page spreads from KFX to EPUB the plugin will now always add the property "rendition:page-spread-center" to pages that do not have a left or right page spread. The "kfx_input_add_comic_spread_center" plugin tweak has been removed.

Emit DOCTYPE in XHTML files when producing EPUB 3 format.

Improve the response time of the From KFX toolbar button if pressed when a large book is selected.

Remove support for calibre versions prior to 6.0. (Older versions of this plugin that work under calibre 2.x through 5.x are available in this post, however the use of those versions is unsupported.)

Thanks. I plan to make some improvements but because of the way that inflections are handled in KFX dictionaries it will still not be perfect.

Problem

Hi jhowell!
I updated the kfx plugin to Version 2.34.0 but unfortunately it broke the import function from Kindle. Am I the only one having the problem or is this a known problem?
Thanks!

For what it may be worth, I am using v2.34.0 of the KFX Input plugin and I am not seeing any errors with importing Kindle files. Calibre 9.13 run from source on Windows 11.

Interesting...

... I'm also using Calibre 9.13, but on Linux. The platform shouldn't be relevant as far as I know.

It would be helpful to know what you mean by "broke the import function".

Also details like your Kindle model and firmware version, does it use MTP, do all books fail or just some.

Just to check, if you revert to an old KFX Input plugin, are you able to import books?

Also note that, AFAIK, the Kindle Voyage is the only Kindle ereader capable of downloading KFX ebooks that has not had it's firmware updated to block the ability to remove DRM. If your firmware was updated to 5.18.2.1.1, 5.18.1.1.1 or 5.16.2.1.1, you are no longer able to import books from your Kindle.

For instance, if a Paperwhite 4 (10th gen) is on 5.18.1, no problems. If it's updated to 5.18.1.1, you are out of luck. Some people have reported that jailbreaking their Kindle and reverting to an older firmware, has allowed them to still download from their Kindle. Just don't forget to disable firmware updates using renametobin or similar.
