I was under that same impression as PeterT. The change is only on the server side which is likely why it will only work with Kobo purchased and synced books. No firmware update is needed.

Kobo has a dedicated page in their knowledge base describing how to link you Kobo StoryGraph accounts. Clear indicator that this is a backend sync.

One curious thing I'm noticing on the Storygraph side though is that one of the books I had purchased from Kobo "abroad" didn't seem to sync up properly. Like it could show the book title, but not the cover or the page numbers. I'm guessing it can only search one Kobo region at a time.

EDIT: I did see that the book had multiple "editions" and managed to select an edition that had the info populated and clicked the "Switch to this Edition" button, so now it shows up properly. We'll see if that solution holds the next time I sync it from the Kobo side.

This feature seems very nice, tought I had also two books bought from Kobo UK, which one of those hadn't a cover at all.
Btw, I just hope it won't get to mismatch the reading dates while opening a book already finished on the device, e.g. just to check notes or a page... as Kobo won't keep the reading progress as "finished" if opening the book again too (iirc).
