I have Windows 11 and the kindle app V1.0.16118. I have also found where the books are stored: ....LocalState>Classic>Content.
When I fetch a book I can see a new entry but what file should be transferred to Calibre?

You don't transfer any files from there manually. You run the archiver via command line and it will transfer the files to the archived_kfx folder. You add them to calibre from there.

I've had some success reaching out to indie authors on Goodreads and Reddit to make their books available as ePub. Since those indie authors are the only ones likely to be Amazon exclusive, I've given up worrying about Amazon DRM removal.

Now if we could just get Amazon to label things as DRM-free on the book page.

Unfortunately plenty of Amazon indies are still using DRM, which means no epubs.

Depends on where you live. I don't know about USA, but it's certainly illegal in the EU.
