Well, then talk of Secure Boot (TM Qualcomm) is not necessary.
I think that Mediatek has something analagous in any case.

A new firmware (Beta V1.4.0) for the Reader is available for those who are part of the beta program.
Finally you can cutomise the AI button a little (Viwoods Setting -> General Settings -> Controls). They just included 4 options so it's really no alternative to using the key mapper app for me. The options are "AI - Ask AI anytime", "Screenshot - Capture Screens...", "App AI" (but you can select one of your installed apps) and "Disabled - No action".
For a first attempt and listening to user's wishes I think it's ok.

They locked down ADB as way to cover up the shabby Android build. It's rooted out of the box which means you can't run banking or payments apps on the device and you probably shouldn't trust it for any personal information especially notes. They pre-bundle Chrome with a doctored icon, and who knows what else embedded inside? The Viwoods 'App Store' app has permissions to read your call logs and contacts and it can't be uninstalled. The ADB lock can easily be bypassed BTW.

What we really need is an AOSP build for this device (as the hardware is really nice) to make it into something other than a mass surveillance device.

Recently a new beta firmware for the AiReader was released (V1.5.5).
You can now change the font of the UI, but only between the few preselected by Viwoods. Hopefully there will be another option to select one's favourite font in the future.
The AI models used are also more recent: GPT-5.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini 3.5 Flash, and DeepSeek V4.
Viwoods says that the ghosting is also improved, but I don't see much changes. With text (black on plain white) only there already was no ghosting in the "Best Display" mode for me.

I don't know what other companies like Google, Apple, Samsung, Lenovo etc implement into their mobile OS versions. So the same about trust or better lack thereof can be said about every company.

Every mobile device with connection the the internet and/or mobile networks is per se a mass surveillance device.

'The ADB lock can easily be bypassed BTW.' There's a dev tool called viwoods_debug_tools that can be used to do this fairly easily. Also I know some have looked into how the tool works so that the app isn't needed.

But for a consumer, it's probably more sensible to just ask Viwoods support to remotely unlock your device. Which they've said repeatedly they will.
