DrNefario said they had in the first post about this, so no issues with the rules.

The same way you add any other epub to Calibre. Once you've downloaded it from the "Manage your content and devices" page, just click the Add Book button in Calibre and select the file from wherever you saved it when you downloaded it.

They didn't download as EPUBs for me, but as zipped files. I unzipped one but no EPUB file in there

Hmmm... I don't have that issue, but I vaguely remember hearing about others with that issue. IIRC, if you just rename the file extension from .zip to .epub, it should work. EPUB files are just ZIP files with a specific structure in them.

To avoid any further hijacking of this thread, you might want to check out this thread if that doesn't work for you.

I'm only asking because Mushroom Blues is currently free (to celebrate a new story set in the same world) and I still haven't read it to recommend. But there, I mentioned it :P
I have read them up to book 11.
I like them myself.

Some browsers change the extension from .epub to .zip because they recognise that the epub is a zip file. Just change it back to .epub

Sorcery and Small Magics (The Wildersongs #1) by Maiga Doocy is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
From debut author Maiga Doocy comes the charming tale of an impulsive sorcerer and his curmudgeonly rival as they venture deep into a magical forest in search of a counterspell that can break the curse between them—only to discover that magic might not be the only thing pulling them together.

Leovander Loveage is a master of small magics. He can summon butterflies with a song or turn someone’s hair pink by snapping his fingers. Though such minor charms don’t earn him much respect, anything more elaborate always blows up in his face, and so Leo vowed long ago never to use powerful magic again.

That is, until a mishap with a forbidden spell binds Leo to obey the commands of his longtime rival, Sebastian Grimm. Grimm is Leo’s complete opposite—respected, exceptionally talented, and absolutely insufferable. The only thing they can agree on is that revealing the curse between them would mean the end of their respective magical careers. They need a counterspell, and fast.

Chasing rumors of a powerful sorcerer with a knack for undoing curses, Leo and Grimm enter the Unquiet Wood, a forest infested with murderous monsters and dangerous outlaws alike. To break the curse, they will have to uncover the true depths of Leo’s magic, set aside their long-standing rivalry, and—much to their horror—work together.

Even as an odd spark of attraction flares between them.

Ahab's Return by Jeffrey Ford is $1 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
A bold and intriguing fabulist novel that reimagines two of the most legendary characters in American literature—Captain Ahab and Ishmael of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick—from the critically acclaimed Edgar and World Fantasy award-winning author of The Girl in the Glass and The Shadow Year.

At the end of a long journey, Captain Ahab returns to the mainland to confront the true author of the novel Moby-Dick, his former shipmate, Ishmael. For Ahab was not pulled into the ocean’s depths by a harpoon line, and the greatly exaggerated rumors of his untimely death have caused him grievous harm—after hearing about Ahab’s demise, his wife and child left Nantucket for New York, and now Ahab is on a desperate quest to find them.

Ahab’s pursuit leads him to The Gorgon’s Mirror, the sensationalist tabloid newspaper that employed Ishmael as a copy editor while he wrote the harrowing story of the ill-fated Pequod. In the penny press’s office, Ahab meets George Harrow, who makes a deal with the captain: the newspaperman will help Ahab navigate the city in exchange for the exclusive story of his salvation from the mouth of the great white whale. But their investigation—like Ahab’s own story—will take unexpected, dangerous, and ultimately tragic turns.

Told with wisdom, suspense, a modicum of dry humor and horror, and a vigorous stretching of the truth, Ahab’s Return charts an inventive and intriguing voyage involving one of the most memorable characters in classic literature, and pays homage to one of the greatest novels ever written.

I can't wait to read this. Hoping it's as entertaining as the first cinematic adaptation of Melville's novel. in 1930, John Barrymore as the embittered Ahab not only slaughters the white whale, but returns home to get the girl!

The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase (The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase Sequence) by Joan Aiken is £2 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)
Children's book. Here's John Crowley writing about it in 2013: Forget Harry Potter: Adults Should Read Joan Aiken's Wolves
Quote:
1832 - a period of English History that never happened. Good King James III is on the throne and the country is ravaged by wolves which have migrated through the newly-opened Channel Tunnel. When Sylvia and Bonnie (both orphans) fall into the hands of evil Miss Slighcarp, they must use all their wits to escape unscathed - for the governess is more cruel and merciless than the wolves that surround the great house of Willoughby Chase.
