I've given up on B&N. I no longer have the app and it's not worth the hassle of trying to find the app and getting it working.

Me too. That was the only reason I still dual-booted to Windows on my computer (that and logging into Windows to update it about every two to three months). I've now deleted my Windows partitions. I've got my Nook books liberated and I'm not buying any more of them, so I didn't need it.

With the website login changes, existing app logins seem to work, but it’s probably now impossible to log in from scratch.

Are there any alternatives to the Windows app to download Nook books anymore?

It's the app used in nook Readers.

Well, yes, there's the Android app. But you'd need a rooted device to actually "own" your books. I tried this not too long ago on a Nook HD running CM 13 and it worked fine. And that was accessing a truly ancient account I had not touched for many years. There were a couple of free books there and I had no problem claiming them (had to deal with the DRM, of course).

Much more recently (last month?) I was trying to explain to a Windows user on Reddit about the app. I found a source for them which bundled in the possibly needed additional .NET stuff. Alas those files were for 32 bit machines, but I found I didn't need any of them for my 64 bit Win 10 antique. No login problems and the books ended up just where people said they would.

But it would be a lesson learned, once this sort of thing was done, to no longer support a not-very-friendly business model.

Yeah. I've caught up with, uh, freeing all of my books so far, so I'm not out anything yet. The smart thing to do would be to ditch them now, but I really don't want to start paying 25% more for my books.
