Is the spacing smaller than with ChareInk6, which I occasionally use?

It's the same size space. But the kerning is better.

Well, I don't use kerning, so I'll keep the 6 for now.

There are more improvements besides the addition of kerning. So it's worth it to switch.

Proportional Oldstyle figures
Capital N Left Hook default changed to lowercase style
Additional character support including Unicode 16
Consistent autohinting
General improvements

Calibre is the easy fix for anything which is wrong with your epub file. In this case, it's a CSS issue and to fix it, select EDIT BOOK from the right-click menu. In the edit window which appears, scroll down to find the stylesheet section and delete all the files you see in that section: This will remove all the clearly wrong CSS code and what remains will be pure, readable, text. Save & replace the file on your device.

Calibre is absolutely essential if you have an e-reader.

It's not a css issue. It's an issue with the Kobo kepub renderer.

Besides, deleting all the css files in a book is about the worst idea ever, as it removes the formatting and basically leaves you with a simple text file. If that's what you personally like, good for you, but most people want to read a book, not just a text file. There are other ways to fix bad css. Which is not even the reason for the OP's problem.

I hate bad keming.
This is not a CSS or HTML issue. It's a bug in the kepub renderer, though KFX is worse.

Something similar happened to me in an ePub where an invisible character was used—I don't remember which one—to ensure that the em dash wouldn't separate from the word it was attached to. It looked perfect in Sigil or Calibre, but on the Libra 2 (at least in kepub format), a small, annoying blank space was displayed instead of the invisible character.
You can 'reveal' these invisible characters in the Calibre editor by moving the cursor through the text using the arrow keys, and the status bar will show you which one it is.

One book I edited was filled with Zero Width No-Break Spaces to control where breaks were not allowed to occur. Not all that many fonts had that character at 0xFEFF so I got various boxes (blank, question mark, etc.) instead. My first pass I changed them to Word Joiner (0x2060) glyphs and then finally just dumped them.
