The victory at Saratoga was a big one, but the American cause is not out of the woods yet. Called south to join Washington’s main army near Philadelphia, Levi Dawson arrives to find a force demoralized by defeats and their failure to hold the capital. Short of supplies, facing desertion, racked by sickness, and outnumbered by a better-trained enemy, Dawson knows things are looking grim. But he’s been in such situations before, and as a newly minted corporal cannot think only of his own suffering, but that of the men he commands. War isn’t always about fighting, and just surviving the winter may be their greatest battle yet. But even in darkness the seeds of something better can be planted, and the army that emerges may just be something the British never expected to face.
