The Libra H2O has terribly place buttons. The buttons actually made the H2O harder to hold because they buttons get in the way.
Anything which reduces the need to touch the screen reduces wear and tear Jon, whether you like it or not that’s an immutable law of physics. And sorry bud, you lose to science every time.

The buttons absolutely make the ereader easier to hold by adding better resistance versus the otherwise smooth surface. Again this is physics and you lose. You’d have an argument if the buttons were significantly larger to the point they exceed the width of your thumb or were significantly smaller such that it became a struggle to feel them. However in both those cases they would have ceased being good at their primary job on the device.

You don’t need to like using them but their benefits outstrip a cover every day of the week without trying.

Your argument about the case not adding bulk or weight also fails against basic physics. You’re adding mass which by its very nature at this scale requires adding weight and bulk. Unless you’re aware of a case made of light though the heat such a thing might add would probably be prohibitive.

Nope. Buttons under your hands means you cannot hold the reader as you want because you could end up pushing a button. Also, by using the buttons, you'll wear them out long before the touch screen will ever wear out.

If I had to hold onto a spot on the Reader that had buttons, I'd not be able to hold it as tight and thus more risk of dropping it. The cover allows a more comfortable holding of the Reader.

Have you ever used an ereader with buttons? Because your comments here make me suspect not. Of course the buttons (or at least the next-page button) are under your fingers: that way, you can switch pages with a twitch of the finger. It takes nonzero force to do so. I can count the number of times I've accidentally switched in my entire time owning buttoned ereaders on the fingers of the hand I hold it with. It just doesn't happen unless you have Parkinsons or something that causes severe tremor or twitching (in which case, by all means, don't buy an ereader with buttons).

You are flogging a nonexistent horse, while demanding fervently that everyone else agree with your preferences because they are perfect and inviolable, even though to everyone who's actually owned an ereader with buttons they appear to be grounded in nothing but ignorance.

The problem with hyperbole is that you can easily make a fool out of yourself. You may find that position comfortable but I for example hate that feeling of constant, even if it's slight, pressure on my thumb. I leave my thumb beside the button. And I don't think I'm alone with that. So can everyone just please chill out? You do you and that's just fine but man, this discussion is tedious.

Agreed, absolutely. No ereader is perfect for everyone, just as some printed books aren't readable for some people (one sign of aging is that I had to return a book recently because its typeface was too small for me to read without agonizing headaches -- for some unfathomable reason the whole book's body text was set at something like six points, with huge gaps between each line. Not a problem with the ebook version of the same book...)

I have a similar problem and it's entirely caused by my refusal to get bi- or multifocal lenses for my glasses...

Maybe the button haters need to 3d print a simple cover for the buttons that would prevent them from being pressed

I've used Sony Readers with no touch screen, Sony Readers with Touch screens, nook STR, Kobo Aura H2O, and my current Reader is a Kobo Libra 2. The ones with the touch screen had ether no buttons or the buttons were not in the way. The Libra 2 is good because the buttons are not in the way. If the buttons where say in the middle instead of the edge, they would be in the way..

I don't want buttons under my fingers. I'm perfectly happy swiping to change the page.

Everyone else is saying that we should have buttons in the way with no case and that's not a good idea. Not everyone wants the same thing. However, a case is to make the Reader easier to hold and to give it some protection. The buttons are an extra because we have the touch screen. Kobo sells buttons. So if the Reader had no buttons, you can still get buttons.

If Kobo makes a 7" and 8" BW Reader with buttons not in the way of holding it, then we'll have two winners instead of (IMHO) two losers (with color).

An interesting idea. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to design two new Kobo readers that will displease the least number of people.

Buttons next to each other at the top of the right side bezel.

Sorry Jon you are yet again and entirely unsurprisingly wrong. Multiple people have pointed out the buttons take intentional force to activate. As to wearing out the buttons before the screen that’s still an argument for buttons as it extends the use of your ereader thanks for seeing the light and accepting that buttons are mandatory.

Buying buttons has already been dismissed as it adds excessive bulk and battery drain needlessly. Moving the buttons is pointless since it’s more practical to get a case to cover them if you don’t like them. Especially as the sole person arguing for their removal is the sole person arguing that cases are mandatory.

As usual your absolute views have painted you into a corner leaving you with only your denial of the physical laws of reality.
