For me buttons are a must. I like holding my Kobo (currently both a Libra Colour and a Libra H2O) with the buttons on the LEFT hand side and the role of the buttons reversed (ie top button forward, bottom button backwards).
I hold the device in my left hand with my left thumb resting on the top button. I normally do not swipe the screen to change pages. |

I used to feel the same way, and then for nearly a year ended up doing most of my reading on my phone. The adjustment was rough but the silver lining is being perfectly comfortable with smaller screens now. eInk is at least an upgrade over OLED in terms of eyestrain, and portability is really a priority for me for now. At some point I'll probably have to start making text larger and we'll see what happens then, but hopefully that's at least a few years off.

Since you already listed making the device easier to hold as a worthy benefit you’re only contradicting yourself if you say they aren’t necessary. A cover adds weight and bulk to a device that has shed both in every iteration within a production line. Making them optional at best. Bordering on purely cosmetic. |

The Libra H2O has terribly place buttons. The buttons actually made the H2O harder to hold because they buttons get in the way. |

Ps: the cover on the Color Note has only the front panel, so lighter than a fully cover; also within the pins it adds the features to wake-up the device just by opening it. *I wouldn't like the feel of stealing from Pocketbook: I guess manufacturing engeeners already can see by themselves from others' ideas.
