What's the easiest jailbreak for a Paperwhite 7th gen (PW3) running firmware 5.16.2.1.1? Thanks.

I’m not experienced on jailbreaks but I recently did my Voyage and Oasis and I used WinterBreak.

When the Windows store K4PC comes out, I'll jailbreak my PW3 is filling the free space does not work to allow me to download KFX that can have the DRM removed. Then I can use the new method for removing the DRM.

Use WinterBreak/WinterBreak2 since it's easiest, otherwise use LanguageBreak

My Voyage was on its last software version 5.13.6. I just remembered that I had to use AddBreak for my Oasis as it was on 5.18.2.

I only used WinterBreak.

Thank you. If necessary, I suppose I can let my Voyage update to 5.13.6, then jailbreak, then downgrade if I am so inclined.

How easy/difficult did you find WinterBreak?

The main risk of winterbreak is you have to enable wifi and sign in to amazon, after which you have to watch for whatever the jailbreak success message is then very quickly disable wifi. When I did Winterbreak I went outside untill the signal was weak. That worked but I'm not confident that I could do it again. Obviously. many have done it without troublle (I'm awkward to begin with and touch screens hate me.)

What happens if you fail to "very quickly disable wifi" in time?

I was tempted by Kindlebreak, which you previously recommended, until you said the developer keys had expired.

The risk is that the device could update itself to a firmware version that cannot be jailbroken. But that only applies to newer devices that are still receiving updates.

A Voyage is not going to update to firmware that cannot be jailbroken. Also, as far as I can tell, even the last firmware version for that device should be immune to the DRM update mechanism that is affecting other older Kindles, so a jailbreak is not strictly necessary for DRM removal.

Oh! Thank you. That helps a lot.

I was thinking of jailbreaking mainly out of curiosity to: 1) see if I could figure it out and learn something new without borking my Kindles, and 2) see if I could figure out Sats's KFXArchiver thing.

The thing is, my Kindles are currently still DeDRM'able. So I may hold off until Amazon does something to make them unDeDRM'able.

Really?!?!? That's FABULOUS!!! If that's the case, I won't mess with my Voyage and will guard it as the precious that it is. Curious what makes it immune to the DRM update mechanism since 5.12.2.2 is affected and Voyage latest firmware is 5.13.6.

I guess that leaves my Oasis as the guinea pig for experimentation and learning

The hardened (without software update) DRM only affects 5.16.2.1.1 (and that at is the version my PW3 is on

Kindle Voyages run 5.13.6 latest so they wouldn't be affected
