interest in faster screens?

I figured out a method to make the eink screen on pocketbook faster. I also discovered that they don't use advanced methods to get the fastest display updates possible. It would be pretty cool to implement them. Its possible for all the carta devices, inpad 3, inkpad 4, very likely possible for other devices too.

But it's quite a bit of work, would you be willing to pay for a display thats 3 times faster?

Personally, I’m not interested. The issue of speed in e-readers has never been a concern for me. As far as reading speed goes, PocketBooks—which are arguably the slowest e-readers on the market—seem more than adequate to me. I don’t need to break any speed records when I read. Whether I’m reading on a PocketBook or a Kindle—which are quite fast—makes no difference to me.

It's never been something that's ever bothered me enough (or at all) to make me consider paying for a solution to. Happy to help test from a development perspective though.

i am interested because its cool and it kinda would be cool to update also a bunch of devices to odern standards, but considering everything, to make it work properly it's substantial work

Not really interested. I adapt to the device. With my first e-reader so many years ago I pressed next page 3 lines from bottom, so it would switch when I read the last word. If faster screen comes at a price for less battery life it would decrease my appreciation of the device.

The faster screen would actually save a lot of power

Personally, I would not be interested either in speed per se - an ereader is not a tablet. What could have some value is a reduction of refresh flashes, or of ghosting in some situations. Though, I would be somehow wary of trying solutions which "may damage your display with a wrong wave" "don't take into account the temperature management of the board". You don't give out too many details, besides flashing up a magic number set to ioctl via lua.

Here are a few links I found around which may give a little background. It would make sense that E-ink does not disclose the proprietary information, though someone might have reverse engineered and leaked it.

A faster screen may need a lot more power. The eink is physical particles in liquid cells.

It might also reduce life.

I wouldn't take it for granted, IIUC (I might be wrong, of course) - the wave is about nudging multiple times the spheres in order to have them ultimately relax in the right angular position for the desired level of gray, no matter their initial state. If an optimal wave uses less nudging cycles, and less of them with high voltages, the OP might be right.

i control the current curve, the current curve is much shorter and voltage stays the same. so you get faster timings and less power usage

in this case, the reagl mode only direct drives the particles, it's not fully implemented.
