Well, my 5th-Gen PaperWhite (that I bought last year, solely to be able to download and transfer books to my computer/Calibre) just stopped being able to download anything new today...
This will pretty much spell the end of my book relationship with Amazon. Last edited by issybird; 05-23-2026 at 02:43 PM. |

So currently, what are the oldest models of kindle and PW to still allow downloading of Amazon ebooks by using Calibre? I wonder how long before they get the chop?

The Paperwhite 2 (6th generation) released September 2013 and the Kindle Basic (7th generation) released October 2014 are the oldest devices that are still supported. The cutoff seems to have been based on models that support KFX format rather than age.

Aren't both of them infected with the new, unbroken DRM?

What devices are still unaffected by the unbroken DRM? Am I just lucky to have two of them?

So are we saying that the PW3 and newer still allow deDRM to be done?
As a non techy person, just wondering if its worth buying a cheap PW from Amazon to give me a bit longer to sort my library of Kindle books. Thanks. |

So far the firmware versions which have been reported to no longer work with older DeDRM are 5.12.2.2 (last firmware for PW 6th gen aka PW2 and basic Kindle 7th gen), 5.16.2.1.1 (last firmware for PW 7th gen aka PW3, basic Kindle 8th and 9th gen, and Oasis 8th and 9th gen aka Oasis 1 & 2), and 5.18.5 and up (11th gen and newer).
So Voyage, 10th gen (basic Kindle, PW4, Oasis 3), and any Kindle not on the aforementioned firmwares still seem to be okay as far as I've seen. Wouldn't count on that lasting though. |
