Thumbs down Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) sign-in changing at ebooks.com

https://support.ebooks.com/hc/en-gb/...s-need-to-know

It seems that Adobe Digital Editions is passing off sign-ins or selling off part of itself to some business called ByteBooks (Wipro). Existing ADE sign-ins are said to continue working but new installs/registrations will require some re-signing-in silliness.

Their summary at the end of the above page:

* This is a one-time sign-in change.
* If Adobe Digital Editions is already working for you, just continue reading as usual.
* If you are asked to sign in again, create a ByteBooks account using the same email address you previously used for your Adobe ID.
* Your eBooks.com purchases are not being removed or cancelled.

Editorial: It seems that ebooks.com is trying their best to make it seem like this change, which they probably had no part in soliciting, will be a nothing-burger but it doesn't seem that way to me at the moment. Maybe I am reading too much into all this but I don't imagine this change will benefit future ebook buyers one bit and is probably a LCP-like premise to lock down ebooks further. I still don't know what this will do to e-readers, old and new, that somehow fail to integrate with this new scheme. But maybe one of you reading this at some point has a better perspective on this than I do at the moment.

Edit: read through this forum and I guess the sale of ADEPT to Wipro is fairly old news: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...0&postcount=19 .

Will it affect deacsm plugin (and others)?
I think it will eventually affect other sellers such as kobo - any seller that uses Adobe ID I imagine.

This sounds like one of those things that is confusing until the need for a change appears somewhere.

I have Adobe Digital Editions installed on my PC and a bunch of devices signed in with that so I expect that for now, not much will change in that sense, but since I de-DRM (with deACSM) all my purchased books as a matter of course, I’m definitely going to keep an eye on any developments...

Transition of Adobe eBook platform to Wipro Engineering- FAQs

Quote:
As of July 2025, Adobe transitioned these responsibilities to Wipro, including future releases and technical maintenance. Wipro now manages and distributes any new updates, enhancements, bug fixes, and support requests directly.

I'm wondering if/how this will affect ePub books obtained through lending libraries. I've never purchased anything through Adobe, but I often download ACSM files from libraries.

It sounds like as long as you have an existing functional ADE authorisation, you don't need to do anything. If you try to authorise a new device to redeem ACSM files, then you may need to create a ByteBooks account to do that, as your ADE credentials won't work for future authorisations.

This is the part that may cause me problems. I didn't realize that my Adobe authorization had used a very old (and now very dead) email address until I checked this evening. I'd rather not lose access to my library even though I download and cleanse every purchase.

Many thanks to ebooks.com for this notification, though. Naturally there's not been a peep from Adobe.

No, you don't. deACSM simply downloads the EPUB or PDF using the acsm file, but without going through ADE, but it doesn't remove any DRM. You must have the de-drm tools installed in Calibre as well as deACSM.

Well, yes, I just meant that I have the de-ACSM plugin also installed so it’s an one-step process of dragging the acsm to Calibre these days. (I used to just download, open in Adobe Digital Editions, and then add to Calibre until I realised an even simpler way existed, heh.)

Sorry for any confusion. I’ve had the deDRM tools installed for so many years that I just take that bit for granted.

The solution is to remove the DRM from your ePub eBooks and then when the time comes, create a new account with a current email.

It's reasons like this why I stopped using ISP email because if I ever switch ISPs, I could lose access to that email. So I prefer email addresses that I won't lose access to.
