Someone asked that same question in the comments. Kobo's reply didn't clearly answer the question in my opinion:

Someone else specifically asked about books loaded from Calibre and there was no response. My assumption is that it will not track sideloaded books.

I would disagree with both you and Jon. I know quite a few people for whom a 7" B&W device is not something that they are asking for. At this point, I know more people who are asking if/when the Sage will be back in stock than people who are decrying the discontinuation of the Libra 2.
