Calibre update causes the Viewer to look low-res

Tried safe mode, text is still blurry in 7.26.0 and normal in 3.48.0

I installed it, but the same issue: it wants the path. I have no idea what the path to QtWebEngine is.

Nope, it's offering to help you find a path with F7 and F8 if that's what the application calls for… but it's not insisting… enter --disable-gpu as the Value.

Thank you. Well, that didn't change anything, the viewer is still fuzzy.

It's not actually fuzzy in safe mode. But there are a zillion processes running when not in safe mode (although very few programs are set to start with Windows), and I have no idea which of them is causing the fuzzy viewer. Many of them restart immediately after I stop them, so I can't even test them one by one. I suspect the culprit may be something concerning drivers, either Intel or Nvidia.

Unfortunately my knowledge about computers is not sufficient to start messing with all those processes, as I don't know what many of them do or why they're necessary.

Interference from 3rd party programs most often comes from those that are run at Start up - simplest way to see them is to look in Task Manager Startup tab.

First thing is to disable (button bottom right) the ones you know you don't use, e.g.…



If the fuzziness goes away, problem solved, otherwise disable the rest, if the fuzziness persists the problem is deeper, if it goes away then its one of programs you just disabled… a process of elimination should find it.

Yes, those are programs and I only have 4 or 5 of them set to start with Windows. All are programs I need and use. But in addition to those there are a lot of processes running that have nothing to do with those few programs. Drivers, Dell processes, Windows processes and several others I have no idea what they are or do.

Edit: I disabled two of the 5 programs starting with Windows. No change. The rest are the built-in wifi program, audio and Windows Defender notifications - not likely culprits.

Yes.

Anyway, I'm mostly using the 3.48 viewer for now (not calibre 3.48, just the viewer).

Later this year I'll upgrade my computer to Windows 11, maybe the problem will go away then. If not, well, 3.48 does what I need it to do, display books.

Did anyone find a solution? Every time I open a book the content of the ebook viewer is blurry. I have to move the window a little bit or resize it to get rid of the bluriness. I've noticed this problem after changing the GPU from AMD RX 580 to Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti, so maybe it's a driver issue

Which OS?

I was going to say, what worked for me was disabling Qt scaling via env var. But now I looked again and I have it set to 1.... instead of 0. So at some point this wasnt necessary with my current display driver.

In calibre 9.8 you can turn off the use of the GPU. It's in Preferences > Tweaks. Just search for GPU.
