A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole is $2 on Amazon.com
Quote:
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize

“A masterwork . . . the novel astonishes with its inventiveness . . . it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue.”-The New York Times Book Review

A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures" (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times).

The Odyssey by Homer, new translation by Daniel Mendelsohn is £1 in the UK (Amazon only, but price-matchable on Kobo)
Quote:
With his Odyssey, best-selling author and classicist Daniel Mendelsohn has created a momentous new work, hailed by classicists and poets alike – a translation to stand with those of E. V. Rieu and Robert Fagles.

Setting aside the streamlining, modernizing approach of many recent translations, Mendelsohn artfully reproduces the epic’s formal qualities – meter, enjambment, alliteration, assonance – and in so doing restores to Homer’s master work its archaic grandeur. His expansive six-beat line, far closer to the original than that of other recent translations, allows him to capture each of Homer’s verses line for line, without sacrificing the amplitude and shadings of the original.

The result is the richest, most precise, and most musical Odyssey in English, one that fully conveys its oral poetics while bringing to vivid life the gripping adventure, profound human insight and powerful themes that make Homer’s work resonate some twenty-eight centuries after its composition. Supported by an extensive introduction and the fullest notes and commentary currently available, Mendelsohn’s Odyssey is poised to become the authoritative English-language version of this magnificent, endlessly enjoyable masterpiece.
As If by Isabel Waidner is £1 in the UK (Amazon only, price-matchable on Kobo)
Quote:
'A brilliant, strange and tender exploration of what it is to fail, keep failing, and fail better' Sarah Bernstein, author of Study for Obedience

Two men meet in a flat in London. They are total strangers and yet they look remarkably alike. Lewis is grieving his dead wife; Korine is hiding from his very-much-alive one. Lewis never had children; Korine is an ambivalent parent at best. Lewis is an erstwhile actor, too depressed to attend the big audition that has just fallen into his lap. Korine has tried a dozen dead-end jobs but never pursued his acting dreams.

Two men living mirror image lives. Each seeking a second chance to get things right. Each wanting what the other has.

As If is an existential farce about the road not taken. Surreal and slyly poignant, suffused with ironic melancholia, it is a parable for the twenty-first century everyman: a character trapped in reality’s hall of mirrors, endlessly searching for something to live for.

The price has dropped at Kobo. Going by the Amazon site, the price drop has only about another 12 hours to go.

I came here to post this; thanks!

Just bought 15 Peter Carey titles on sale at Kobo.UK for £0.99 - for me: £0.89 as a VIP member.

Total price in USD, only $17.95 !!!!

Check him out if you enjoy reading literary works of a fantastical nature with outrageous happenings, combined with crazy/zany unrehearsed characters, in settings that happen in (mostly) Australia.

WARNING! - CAREFUL! - WARNING! - CAREFUL! - WARNING!

1.) At least one novel has no quotation marks
2.) Somewhat post-modern
3.) Often surreal
4.) Can be challenging for 'tired' readers
5.) major literary writer

They Were Counted, the first novel in the wonderful trilogy set in pre-1914 Hungary by Miklós Bánffy is down to 99¢ at Kindle for a limited time. And if you're hooked, the other two books are not very expensive.

Kin by Tayari Jones is £1 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)
Historical fiction. Review by Ian Mond.
Quote:
A yearning for their missing mothers pulls Vernice and Annie apart. It will take a devastating tragedy to bring them back together.

Vernice and Annie are 'cradle friends', born days apart in Honeysuckle, Louisiana, both destined never to know their mothers. The girls are inseparable, bound by a friendship far deeper than sisterhood. But this is the American south in the 1950s. Black girls like Vernice and Annie have to fight for every opportunity they can, and neither one can build the future they hope for in Honeysuckle.

Gradually, inevitably, the girls drift apart. Vernice pursues her education; Annie is lured by the promise of a heady first love affair and a growing obsession with finding her mother. But her search pulls her even further into a world of danger that soon leaves her oldest friend battling to save her.

Tayari Jones returns with an exuberant, richly told story about mothers, daughters, and a lifelong friendship that is as dangerous as it is unbreakable.
