Goodreads is a shill for Amazon. Today I was looking for the eBook listing for Radiant Star by Ann Leckie.

There is a Kindle edition. The first supposed eBook edition is also a Kindle edition even though it's labeled ebook. There's no ISBN for the eBook version. There is now no way to add a missing edition. Seems the librarians have to do it.

What a major cockup.

Wow. If this is your idea of a major cockup, what language do you use when something serious goes wrong? In the grand scheme of things....

Frankly, I get it. It's trivial to submit a request to a librarian and much better than the alternative of letting anyone submit or alter listings at will. Talk about the potential for a major cockup! For that matter, my understanding is that it's not difficult to become a Goodreads librarian. Why not pursue it if it's that important to you?

Previously you could not edit a listing. You could only add a missing listing.

In this case though there's no reason why the eBook (not Kindle) is not there. Is this going to become a an issue with new books where someone has to request the eBook edition?

I'm calling Hanlon's Razor here. The Goodreads database is rife with errors, but it's still the best book database out there, which is one reason I stay despite the intrusive marketing.

As I see it, you have three options: ignore it, report it or decamp permanently and entirely to a different site. My own experience says you'll be doing a lot more reporting at one of the other sites. My preference is to ignore it, but that's me.

I can't help thinking that you're letting your spleen with Amazon in regard to DRM overflow to encompass every minor hiccup. Is it worth the energy that takes?

What edition did you want added?

There are two Kindle editions for sale. One is labeled space opera and the other as LGBT+. Same price.

Neither. I wanted the eBooks edition. No ASIN and the proper ISBN.

Um. If a Kindle version of a book is readable on an electronic device then surely it IS an eBook.

Just because you want an ePub does not mean that the Kindle version is NOT an eBook.

Perhaps you could have checked other sites such as Kobo considering that Goodreads is a subsidiary of Amazon? OTOH, checking the Kindle edition shows the same ISBN as Kobo does though the edition labelled ebook shows a different page count (400) and ASIN as the edition labelled as Kindle.

Just because you want an ePub does not mean that the Kindle version is NOT an eBook.

This issue is that Goodreads has a Kindle Edition. So they can use that for the Kindle eBooks and eBooks should be other then Kindle.

This is incorrect. The only listing that has the ISBN for the eBook shows as a Kindle Edition. Also, what shows as the eBook is also a Kindle edition. It's s all screwed up. There is no actual eBook edition that's not a Kindle edition.

To try to drag this discussion back to where reality is a naked eye object, if you look at the ISBNs in the images I posted, the ISBN (978-0316290685) is the same for the Kobo listing and the Goodreads Kindle listing. If you look up Radiant Star on Hachette's web site, it shows the same ebook ISBN and links to Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, Ebooks.com and Kobo. clicking on the Amazon button, the page that opens shows the same ISBN and an ASIN of B0FPCCYTL1.

The problem is that the ISBN is already used for a Kindle edition. So it cannot be used for a real eBook edition listing unless the ISBN is removed from the Kindle edition.
