Gollitok by Andrew Najberg is $1 at Amazon only. Downloadable as ePub.

I have another book by this author, The Mobius Door. My better half read it and wasn't wild about it.

Quote:
In a post-nuclear Eastern Europe, Hammel E Varka departs for a remote island to join a survey team cataloguing the abandoned Gollitok prison in the hopes that he will redeem his family’s tarnished reputation.

After the passage across the strait leaves a team member injured, Varka quickly realizes that this survey is far from routine and that what he thought he knew about the island was a cover for more horrifying truths.

As his team presses deeper into the decaying facility, hidden agendas splinter the team, and they find themselves beset with dangers beyond their worst nightmares.

Anyone have thoughts on this bundle? I’m reading through the descriptions, but I’ve not heard of most of these authors. Also, the descriptions are not giving us the length. “Novelette” can be a long short story or a short novella. I suppose I can look each one up elsewhere….

Thirty bucks for all 17 ebooks seems exorbitant, compared against Humble Bundle's recent full-package purchases.

Yes, it does. Especially if it's 17 longish short stories.

The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
A genre-defining tale of first contact by one of the twentieth century’s most brilliant—and neglected—science fiction and horror writers, whom Stephen King called “the best writer of science fiction that England has ever produced.”

“In my opinion, [John] Wyndham’s chef d’oeuvre . . . a graphic metaphor for the fear of unwanted pregnancies . . . I myself had a dream about a highly intelligent nonhuman baby after reading this book.”—Margaret Atwood, Slate**

NOW STREAMING ON AMC AS THE MIDWICH CUCKOOS: VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED

What if the women of a sleepy English village all became simultaneously pregnant, and the children, once born, possessed supernatural—and possibly alien—powers?

A mysterious silver object appears in quiet, picture-perfect Midwich. A day later, the object is gone—and all the women in the village, they will come to learn, are now pregnant.

The resultant children of Midwich are shockingly, frighteningly other. Faced with these unfathomable and potentially unstoppable children, the question arises: What will humanity do when faced with the threat of the unknown?

Not sure which listing you're looking at--I spy two with the same title and same price:
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/del...bW_8soR&cPos=2
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/del...bW_8soR&cPos=1

However, it's worth noting that both carry the same disclaimer in the description:
Quote:
Please note: no known copies of Wyndham’s first novel ‘The Curse of the Burdens’ are available at the time of publication. Four novels cannot appear due to US copyright law: ‘The Day of the Triffids’; ‘The Chrysalids’; ‘The Midwich Cuckoos’; and ‘Trouble with Lichen’. When new works enter the public domain, they will be added to the collection as a free update.
Were you perhaps pulling from the Kobo UK edition?

I’m not seeing “The Complete Works” on Kobo US either. But it does seem to be available on Delphi’s website. No disclaimer.

That may be where I got it. Sorry about that.

I'll check on it tomorrow morning. Right now, I'm going to settle back in bed and read.

^^^^^^

OK, YES, my info did come from the Delphi site. My thanks to Cactus Chef for pointing out my lack of clear information.

For the price of $3.99, one can purchase the John Wyndham book that has the missing works added [due to copyright restrictions], with this note added:

"Please note: this product is not for sale to customers located in Europe and other 70-year countries, due to copyright restrictions. European release year: 2040."

Four bucks, however, is still a great price to have virtually everything John Wyndham wrote. I acquired it during my extensive vacation travels.

Blackburn by Bradley Denton is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
A dark comedy novel about "an America of petty injustices and vanished dreams, where a sensitive Kansas boy can grow into a killer" ( Publishers Weekly ).

Jimmy Blackburn grows up in the Midwest believing the things that adults tell him. He questions his teachers and they lie to him. He questions his parents and his father beats him. He questions the world and it hurts him.

And so Jimmy Blackburn becomes a killer, amassing at least twenty-one victims. They include law enforcers, writers, adulterers, auto mechanics, and other liars. . .

This is an exceptional novel, at once riotously funny and searingly potent: a vision of America through the eyes of the central bogeyman of our culture.

"Using stark, unadorned prose, Denton has created a modern-day parable illustrating the shades of good and evil and the meanings of life. Sometimes humorous but more often heart-wrenching, Blackburn delivers a knockout punch to rigid, self-satisfied thinking everywhere. Excellent." — Library Journal

Solace House by Will Maclean is £1 in the UK (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
IN THE SUMMER OF 1993, broke student Alex Lane joins a team clearing out Solace House, a Victorian mansion bequeathed to the university by a reclusive hoarder called Flayne. The other students are a mixed bunch, but Alex quickly falls into a close friendship with the lively, redheaded Ella.

When the crew begins sorting through piles of junk, they stumble upon Flayne's journals, in which he details his obsession with his missing mother, his discovery of a place called Bewise, and - most mysteriously - his belief in another realm lying parallel to ours, along with coded instructions as to how it might be reached.

As the students delve deeper into the house's secrets, one of them becomes obsessed with deciphering Flayne's strange opus and its promise of another world... and they may be willing to sacrifice everything, and everyone, to get there.
