Adobe Digital Editions for Macintosh

I received notice on my M3 Macbook Air today that Adobe Digital Editions 4.5 in an Intel app and won't be supported in the next version of MacOS, starting no doubt in September.

Is there any word of a Apple Silicon compatible version, or an alternative? Will I continue to be able to use the Calibre plugin, or simply won't be able to use Kobo bookstore downloads on my Mac?

Probably the ACSM input plugin for calibre would be a solution. It adds support for calibre to directly process the ACSM file to download the ePub.

ADE - New Owner

I received the same notification on my M1 Mac Mini. After a bit of digging I found this page:
https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/support/d...-editions.html

There are further links to an organisation called Wipro/ByteBooks - it says no change to the app but there will have to be to use Apple silicon.

I use the product when borrowing library books in the UK either through Overdrive or BorrowBox. I hope they will have/are putting some pressure on one of the above organisations to produce an Apple silicon version.

Obviously Adobe are washing their hands of a product which, although a standard, makes no money for them.

You don't need a version of ADE for Apple's processors. You can use the Intel version. Rosetta will handle it.

Another option is to use calibre with the ACSM Input plugin. That takes an ACSM file and downloads the eBook and puts it in calibre.

Apple Silicon

The notification from Apple is that the next release of MacOS will not support Intel versions of software even via Rosetta.

And library software always asks if you have ADE installed.

That is the library wanting to make sure that you are able to handle an Adobe Content Server Message file. Much like when I download a book from a couple of sites, they ask if I have Thorium if I download the lcp file.

I can use ADE or I can use the ACSM plugin with calibre. Either will take a .acsm file and download the ePub using the information in the .ascm file. Neither removes the DRM which I prefer for library books (I don't 'own' them so I don't remove DRM from them—personal moral quirk).

Thank You

Thank you David. I didn't know that - you learn something new everyday!

I have installed ACSM plugin and will give it a try on my next library download.

And then there are all the sites that flat out state that adobe acrobat is required to read PDF.
