I'm talking about when you're in a book and pull up the definition of a single word by long pressing a word. (You used to be able to open the dictionary via that mechanism too but you can't any more, unless it's in some way I can't find and/or have forgotten. I shouldn't have to think - it should just be there, where I'm currently looking!)

I know that. I thought your previous reply about sometimes seeing the next word was in the context of when it was still possible to open the dictionary after highlighting a word or short phrase.

All my kindles run firmware earlier than any of this dictionary silliness.

Ah. No, it's on the normal "show a single word" functionality but where it sneaks in a second word. Not even a related word that might be useful - just whatever's next. I have no idea why they took the "open dictionary" option away. Just like I have no idea why you could never click on words in the definition of the selected word to see what they mean. Seems like such an obvious thing to add.

On my PW6, 5.19.4 has completely ruined the bottom margins of my side loaded AZW3 ebooks using Bookerly. Now there's a big bottom margin space when there wasn't before on 5.19.3.0.1, even though all the font settings are exactly the same (font size 3, bold level 1). Not very happy. And the older UI for font menu, TOC etc has become the same as KFX, which I find very unattractive.

Luckily I have another, back-up, PW6 with 5.17.1.0.4 fw, so am using that and making sure to leave airplane mode most definitely on. I'm thinking of jailbreaking as well, so I can install that patch that prevents OTA updates.

It's 4 years, and since they specify it's security updates these bug fixes and feature additions don't apply to that timeline. Until there's something that exposes PII or account information/access then I doubt they'll get an official update.

Meanwhile, a new feature has appeared on Scribes running 5.19.4 (which does not include Scribe Colorsoft): Outline highlighting style. It’s on my 2022 Scribe.

I believe @jhowell found a reference to this quite awhile ago in one of the updates.

So there is now normal, underline and outline, and you can combine them. I would post screen captures but don’t have the Scribe with me.

Outline style puts an outline around all of the selected text.

I don’t understand why this is a Scribe only feature, nothing precludes doing the same with the Kindle apps or other Kindles. But Underline shipped months ago and has not shown up on non-Scribes.

update issues
Hello everyone, my Kindle Scribe 2022 updated to version 5.19.4 a few days ago, and since then it has become noticeably less responsive than before. The whole system feels very slow and laggy. On top of that, often when I try to open a book from my library, the device often freezes or crashes. The book won’t open and I get an error message saying something like: “Application error, please try again later.” At that point, I’m forced to do a very long restart just to access my books again. Unfortunately, the issue keeps coming back after a while. Is anyone else experiencing this after the latest update?
Any help or support would be greatly appreciated, because right now the device is becoming very frustrating to use. Thank you!

If it were me I'd factory reset and copy all the books over again.

Depending on how much content you have on your Kindle, t can take a long time to reindex content after an update and it causes performance issues while that is happening. Restart won't help with this.

To see if this is the case, search for '.' from Home or Library and one of the search results is 'Text in Books'. If that is enabled it means it is still indexing.

Occasionally some content is corrupted and cannot be indexed, and indexing cannot finish. You can tap Text in Books to see which content is still being indexed. Deleting those books will allow indexing to finish.

My 2022 Scribe is not having performance issues with 5.19.4.

It’s funny that currently, the Kindle firmware update page has the update 5.19.4 available for Kindle Scribe 2022 but not 2024 or 2026.

I was just going to ask that. I find it strange the older Scribe gets 5.19.4 but not the newer ones. I wonder if it’s safe to load 5.19.4 on my 2024 Scribe
