Wow, that would be a serious nightmare. Not only the already terrible contrast of K3 E Ink screens, but coloured text at 150 ppi with even worse contrast would be the pinnacle example of adding insult to injury.

I agree coloured book covers look good. But not at the expense of the legibility of the actual content inside. You stare at the cover for a couple of minutes per book at best, while you read the content for long hours. Spending 100x more time on something makes it more important, and that's the reading experience, not the fanciness of the cover. I don't have an issue with colour screens either, as long as we still have the option of black and white, which has better contrast and is more legible, just like paper books. |

I also was wrong when thinking color e-readers have always a more greyish whites, instead it seems that's not true when using it within the backlight on. Spoiler:

Mobius screens don't have better contrast. When the Sage came out, several reviewers compared it to the Forma and said that the Forma had noticeably worse contrast.
Mobius screens make the device lighter. They don't improve screen contrast or readability. |

![]() The contrast is 300 DPI also on Forma; maybe the feeling is more alike "matte", slighly "grainy ", somehow?? |

I don't think waterproofing means there is an additional screen layer. It usually means a coating on the components inside the device, not on the screen.

The difference is coming from the screen tech: Forma is Carta and plastic (Mobius), Sage is Carta 1200 and glass. Later generation Carta screens have better contrast, which means lighter background and darker text. So the worse contrast on the Forma comes purely from the older display tech. But still, this is an acceptable trade-off for a reader which is more durable than their successors.

My fondness for ‘colouring in’ the novels I read is well known, and I won’t dwell on the subject. The question isn’t whether a book contains a lot or a little colour content, but whether that colour content justifies the purchase of a colour e-reader for a particular person. And that’s something we can’t decide for others. It may seem unimportant or even irrelevant to me that the only colour content I’ll see is the book covers, but to someone else that might seem more than enough reason to buy one. And that’s justification enough for that person because a monochrome e-reader, however wonderful its screen may be, cannot display the colour content that that particular person wants to see. And I’m referring to book covers, just as I might refer to the interface, the header and status bar, underlining, comics or anything else in colour that comes to mind (in my particular case, adding colour to parts of the novels I read). If you look through the reviews of users who buy colour e-readers, you might understand a little better why their sales have become so widespread, even if you don’t agree with those reasons.

At the same time, it's really sad that fanciness is considered more important than the actual content and legibility of a book... given that a Kaleido 3 display's contrast and therefore legibility is worse than a Vizplex display was 16 years ago. If that's the future, reading on E Ink is cooked. But I still trust in common sense, as coloured text books won't happen at the expense of regular black text books, nor will K3/Colour be the only E Ink ereader display type. As always, the content of a book is what matters. Worst case scenario, hardcover and paperback books can't have coloured menus. |

For me, Nooks aren't an option. Had one, hated the software. So it will be probably a Boox. If they still make any by the time I need a new reader, of course.
