Wow, that would be a serious nightmare. Not only the already terrible contrast of K3 E Ink screens, but coloured text at 150 ppi with even worse contrast would be the pinnacle example of adding insult to injury.

As others said, book covers don't count. I mean the actual book content, which is essentially black and white text most of the time. Coloured text would be both foolish and nonsense. I explained why in my previous comment.

I agree coloured book covers look good. But not at the expense of the legibility of the actual content inside. You stare at the cover for a couple of minutes per book at best, while you read the content for long hours. Spending 100x more time on something makes it more important, and that's the reading experience, not the fanciness of the cover.

I don't have an issue with colour screens either, as long as we still have the option of black and white, which has better contrast and is more legible, just like paper books.

Imho, not if the screen would be mobius? I've been always for 300 dpi and no compromizes since my first e-readers (Kobo Aura HD), but it looks, at least to me, from the reviews I see that that less layer on a device within mobius screen (as the Forma have, or the Pocketbook Color Note) helps for that, not to mention the less glossiness.
I also was wrong when thinking color e-readers have always a more greyish whites, instead it seems that's not true when using it within the backlight on.
Spoiler:
pardon if posting it again, it's not for spam, but even on the details the video shows that the DPIs are actually more than the 120 on the specs:

@2:46, also it mentions it as the brightest screen, probably due that mobius technology, comparing it to other Kaleido 3 (@5:31)

Mobius screens don't have better contrast. When the Sage came out, several reviewers compared it to the Forma and said that the Forma had noticeably worse contrast.

Mobius screens make the device lighter. They don't improve screen contrast or readability.

It's not only lighter, the Sage has a waterproof layer iirc, other than a different screen:

The contrast is 300 DPI also on Forma; maybe the feeling is more alike "matte", slighly "grainy ", somehow??

I don't think waterproofing means there is an additional screen layer. It usually means a coating on the components inside the device, not on the screen.

Isn't it glossy? Perhalps not for that reason, too I think Carta screens are thicker, no? Or all the others within glass protection, even if the contrast is the same, on paper, the fact to have the actual text closest to the surface changes the way it looks.
That's what the "paper-like" devices are all about imho.

No, plastic screens don't improve contrast either. What does slightly improve contrast is the recessed screen vs the flush one, but that is not an absolute rule. There are flush screens with excellent contrast and recessed screens with not so good contrast. And vice versa, of course.

The difference is coming from the screen tech: Forma is Carta and plastic (Mobius), Sage is Carta 1200 and glass. Later generation Carta screens have better contrast, which means lighter background and darker text. So the worse contrast on the Forma comes purely from the older display tech. But still, this is an acceptable trade-off for a reader which is more durable than their successors.

My fondness for ‘colouring in’ the novels I read is well known, and I won’t dwell on the subject. The question isn’t whether a book contains a lot or a little colour content, but whether that colour content justifies the purchase of a colour e-reader for a particular person. And that’s something we can’t decide for others. It may seem unimportant or even irrelevant to me that the only colour content I’ll see is the book covers, but to someone else that might seem more than enough reason to buy one. And that’s justification enough for that person because a monochrome e-reader, however wonderful its screen may be, cannot display the colour content that that particular person wants to see. And I’m referring to book covers, just as I might refer to the interface, the header and status bar, underlining, comics or anything else in colour that comes to mind (in my particular case, adding colour to parts of the novels I read). If you look through the reviews of users who buy colour e-readers, you might understand a little better why their sales have become so widespread, even if you don’t agree with those reasons.

My druthers exactly. It's why I don't think 7" devices are very interesting. Too big to be portable, too small for ideal armchair reading.

I can see myself in this position. I've been holding off on getting a GL4+ because my Aura One is still doing the job and I do vastly prefer using Kobo because of direct downloads, but if the Aura One goes belly up, the GL4+is the next best thing. That's if B&N is still selling them, of course, but I hate to anticipate.

It makes me tired to think of having to download my Kobo books for USB transfer....

I was wondering, if all those people who have a colour ereader as their first one, would they still have bought one if only BW ereaders were available?

At the same time, it's really sad that fanciness is considered more important than the actual content and legibility of a book... given that a Kaleido 3 display's contrast and therefore legibility is worse than a Vizplex display was 16 years ago.

If that's the future, reading on E Ink is cooked. But I still trust in common sense, as coloured text books won't happen at the expense of regular black text books, nor will K3/Colour be the only E Ink ereader display type. As always, the content of a book is what matters. Worst case scenario, hardcover and paperback books can't have coloured menus.

For me, Nooks aren't an option. Had one, hated the software. So it will be probably a Boox. If they still make any by the time I need a new reader, of course.

Yes. the BW is better with light off but with light on both my Clara Colour and BW at the same brightness 12 for me I prefer the colour because the comfort pro light is more orange than on the more urine/yellow BW.

Best wishes koboy 🙂
