Just because you don't want to believe there are factors other than blocking DRM removal involved with these decisions does not change the fact that such factors exist. So Amazon has already stopped me from buying a Kindle book and download it to my old Kindle. I thought I had to 20th May.
"This title is only available on select devices and the latest version of the Kindle app. Please refer to the supported device list before purchase. Available on these devices". Then it has a list of the devices and of course mine isn't on it.

In my opinion, that's the vast majority of ALL Amazon ebook consumers out there. Ebook library curators are few and far between.

That's probably completely different from the May 20 deadline. There have ALWAYS been Amazon books that were only readable on certain devices.

I've purchased* multiple books in the past couple weeks that have this warning, and they still download to my old Kindle 4 without issue. That said, I only risked it because I had the newer Paperwhite available if the 4 didn't work.

*I decided to grab some back catalog titles before I implement my personal hard limit restrictions on only buying books that allow epub download, but preferably not buying from Amazon at all.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite 2012 version. I've had no problem before purchasing a kindle ebook, download it to my Kindle, transfer it to Calibre and remove the DRM.

It may be worth noting that for the old Kindle DRM on the older devices, the DRM-infected file can be copied from the Kindle to other storage, removed from the Kindle and recopied on to the original Kindle when needed--it will still be readable even if the DRM has not been been removed.

I can't personally understand not taking the extra step of removing the DRM, but it isn't strictly necessary to do so to deal with having more books than fit on the device storage.

Have you tried to download it in case it's a mistake? Why would the Kindle Touch (4th Gen) be listed and not the PW1 (5th Gen)?

Both of those devices are fully operational now. Downloading won't be possible later this month.
