New Kobo recommendation?

Hi All,

This is my second Clara BW with power button issues, and I'm done with Clara BW.

I like the unit, but it's insane to keep buying new ones.

Can someone recommend which Kobo they use that has the fewest problems?

I don't need or want color, and I prefer the 6-7" size.

It's kinda hard to search for 'I don't have problems'.

Do you live in a country where warranties don't exist? The only way the device would not be covered by warranty would be if you bought it between April 30 2024 and Mai 8 2024.

I've never had a power button issue with any of my Kobos (since the Touch, 2012). Have had a Libra 2 for four years now and it's pristine. But I rarely touch the power button - that's just for resets. I use the sleepcover for all everyday sleep/wakes.

Also why are you "buying new ones"? At least one, probably two of your issues should have been warranty returns.

What's wrong with the power button and why do you need to use it so much? Just get a sleep cover and you'll barely touch the power button.

As to 6"-7" Readers in BW, you have the only one Kobo currently makes without color. You'd have to move to a Libra Colour to move on from the Clara BW.

The buttons on my Kobo Clara HD and its twin, the Tolino Shine 3, broke within a month of each other. Now I just leave them in sleep mode.

I've been using the Sage and the Libra 2 since late 2021. I read without a cover and use the power button several times a day. No issues so far.

The stupid thing will refuse to sleep, or even turn off. If it is off, then it refuses to turn on. I have had to do a factory reset several times.

To be a bit more clear - the button is not physically broken. It simply stops doing anything, until I do a factory reset.

The first Clara BW started doing the same thing and I immediately bought a new one.

I don't use covers as I read in bed (back back) and I have a 'stand' bolted to my headboard.

This makes no sense. If the power button works, then it should do what it's supposed to do. A sleep cover seems to be what will help you the most. You won't need to use the button. If the stand you are using cannot take the Clara BW with a cover, then you should look into another stand that will do it.

Any chance you have enabled the screenshot via power button feature? Either through NickelMenu or direct editing of the configuration file to add Screenshot=true under [FeatureSettings].

I suppose it's possible, but since I factory reset I can't tell.

Why?

I do know that I have never taken a screenshot.

Also, my first Clara BW did not have NickelMenu. I only added it recently because of the remote.

Plug in your Kobo to the computer and copy the config file. Then post it here so someone can see if there is something causing your power button issue.

As I said. I did a factory reset, and I have reinstalled NickelMenu for the stupid Remote. So, that original config is gone.

I honestly don't think NickelMenu is the problem, as this is the first time I have ever installed it, and I had similar issues with the first Clara BW I had.

It seems to be Ok for now...after the reset. But it is extremely tedious to be doing this over and over.

Why? Activating that feature disables the power button and instead uses it to take screenshots. Holding the switch down for an extended period will however perform a reset

Do you have an option in NickelMenu to allow you to take screenshots?

@JSWolf -- I don't know for sure if I had the screenshot option or not. I copied someone's config and I guess it must have been enabled.
