Reread a book on a kobo
Hey everybody, how are you keeping track of your eBooks which you read more than once? Unfortunately my kobo clara is not counting more than 1 finished book for every ebook, no matter how often I read it. There are some books which I have read for numerous times (like 3 or 4 times), but the reader doesn't display that correct. So how are you keeping track or is it something which you don't mind at all?
If somebody from the kobo company is reading this, it would be great to have this feature in the next firmware update: When I finish a book on my device it should be counted as 1. When I open it afterwards the display should still show 1 finished book for this one. And if I reread the book, it should be counted as 2 and so on. |

I don't keep track of my rereading. Others who do, usually do it in calibre.

Yeah, I thought that too. I kinda hoped some of you track it somehow on their device.
My semi optimal solutions would be to put some dummy ebooks without any text and then I could put them to "book finished" whenever I read a book more than once. Or we all have some ebooks which we never finish, because they might not be what we expected. I always give a book some time to get good, but after 20%-25% if it is not getting better, I put them to rest in a folder called: not good. Then I could put those to finished whenever I reread an ebook. I don't want to mess around with the sqlite file or how it's called. Unless some of you figured a bulletproof solution for that to change the finished books stats manually. |

I just delete all the finished books from my devices. If I want to reread them at some point, I'll load them again from calibre. Ditto for DNFed books - I don't see any point in keeping them on my Kobos. It's not important for me to keep any reading stats on my Kobos.

I manage books for my mom with calibre. I started with an added check box column. When she asked to reread some some books, I added another integer column called rereads.
If I had to redo it, I would have added a column called "mom num reads". And we delete books on the readers after we read them. |

I think I don't understand the issue. If it's about Kobo reading stats, that's something I don't look at from one year to the next, but I assume that every time you restart a book it's counted again in the stats? I know the book status changes from "Finished" to "Reading" when it's reopened. (Or when I go back to read the introduction after I've finished a book. Which is mildly annoying, but it's easy enough to change the status back to "Finished" once I'm done.)
On the other hand, if it's just so you know, why not create new shelves: Read twice, Read 3X, etc., and manually put the book in it once you're done? I personally don't reread and I delete books on completion. |

I'm using calibre as well.
I created two additional columns (plus the one used to sync the last read date with Kobo). When I re-read, I manually put the old date (only the year, I'm not interested in the date itself) in one of those columns. The other one calculates the # of values it finds. |

The thing is that I have all my ebooks on my kobo device and from time to time I like to look at the stats for total finished books. Of course I could make new collections with the title "read 3 or 4 times" and put the books there, but for the total amount I still have to count them all instead of just looking at the number on the activity board.
It's not a biggie, but as you already said it's annoying that kobo resets the stats whenever I reopen an finished ebook. Would be great if there is a patch to solve this so the number of finished books never goes down; just up. |

As far as I am aware, there is no provision in the Kobo firmware to mark a book as having been finished more that once. That is why the people for whom those stats are important use calibre to keep track.

It would be great to have this feature on device. I use StoryGraph to track everything, including rereads, but I know using a website to track is not everyone's cup of tea. If you already use Calibre, that would be the most simple solution.

Of course, if you don't want to use calibre to keep tabs on reads and re-reads, you could just do the old tried and true method of using an Excel spreadsheet. I did that for many years. And if you have two number columns, you can have a total number of books read and a total number for the year, and maybe a third number column for how many times the book has been read.
I eventually whipped up a program to keep tabs on it all for me, and even show stats. I don't bother to keep tabs on how many times I've read a book though, but it wouldn't be hard to step through each instance and count as I go. Not that I re-read very often these days ... too much to read, and so little time. |
