I doubt it's about not wanting to support Windows 10. It's very easy to write a program that works on Windows 10 and 11. I think it's because to have Windows 11, you need TPM 2.0 and the new Kindle will make use of TPM.

I think it's all about DRM in this case.

It's been a few years since I played with it but Microsoft does supply a TPM Base Services (TBS) API for storing, retrieving invalidating, etc. information from the TPM chip's storage.

Yes. It's very clear what you, and some others, think, but don't know about the situation. FUD is always rampant around here where Amazon is concerned.

Disable your TPM chip in BIOS. Dump Windows and switch to Linux. That's the only way to maintain any shred of desktop computer privacy. And even then, you still have a long row to hoe to protect yourself.

Did I interpret the above post correctly, ... the new Kindle will have a TPM chip in it?

Well, you can't deny that Amazon is pretty aggressively plugging all the remaining holes for DRM removal. Several such decisions in quick succession, one after the other.

Why can't I? Because a very niche group of people on the internet say that's what they're doing?

Kicking 12 year-old devices out of their garden and making the new Kindle app Windows 11 only don't really count as aggressively plugging anything in my book. So what's that leave... disabling D&T a while back?

No. They're also injecting hardened DRM into 6th-11th gen Kindles that no longer receive firmware updates. They stopped older Kindle apps from downloading books published after a randomly selected date (those apps can still happily download books published before that date). And they disabled older versions of their Android apps.

They've been trying to "harden" their DRM for long, long time now. For years in fact. They change; DRM-removal adapts. Lather rinse repeat. Why is this stuff any different? Because the niche internet group says this will be the one that can't be broken?

I agree there is an ongoing effort on their part to stop DRM removal. Of course there is. Always has been. And everyone is free to have differing opinions on what constitutes "aggressive" I'm just not buying the fact that every single decision they're making right now should be attributed to that effort. Like this one for instance.

It almost certainly is. Because Kindle for PC was hacked by Satsuoni not that long time ago, and they want to stop that. Replacing it with the Windows store app at the same time as ditching old pre-KFX Kindles and infecting all KFX-capable Kindles with an unbroken DRM version would be a huge coincidence if not connected.

The speculation is that the new Kindle APP for Windows will make use of the TPM chip that is required for Windows 11 as part of it's DRM implementation.

Kindle for PC was "hacked" (not really the correct term but we'll ignore that) years and years ago. The ability to remove DRM via the program has been on again off again for that long. Good on Satsuoni for their most recent efforts, but I doubt Amazon even took that much notice, to be honest. They tend to work a little farther ahead than that. I've seen too much of this back and forth over the years to attribute any special effort being made on Amazon's part to thwart an individual's efforts against them. They do what they do, whenever they decide to do it. They're not "watching the forums" to see who's getting close to breaking through on anything by any means (sorry if that pops anyone's notion that they've gained any sort of notoriety in Amazon employee circles).
