Two units, different screens
I've recently received a second Libra 2 unit. Got it as insurance in case my original one needs any replacement parts I have a donor ready to go. Since I had the two units side by side I was looking to see if there may be a differences.
First unit was manufactured in late 2021 (6B0 board), second unit is late 2023 (6F0 board) Second one is noticably brighter (at 17% brightness the older unit needs to be 27% to match). I also feel the second unit is sharper than the first, though they should both be Carta 1200 displays, right? Did Rakuten change the product in subtle ways over the years or am I mistake about the screen sharpness between the two? Can I safely make this a donor or has so much changed that I should avoid it? |

To my knowledge, there is always a lot of variability in e-paper screens. It's just a question of whether you're satisfied with the way a particular screen looks. If not, you can only try exchanging it to see if you like the next screen you get better, but of course it might also look worse.

I was almost afraid it was not a legitimate unit with how different the screens are. Then again I imagine its difficult and not worth the trouble making counterfeit e-ink screens.
It is something that can only be seen side-by-side I feel. But now that I have seen it I think I might just switch to the second unit and have the older one as the donor instead. |

The screen differences come from E Ink, not from Kobo/Netronix.
I guess not many people remember when the Aura One series had at least two different types of night light. Some models had a red light, while newer ones came with an orange light. Now we have yellow. Honestly, I'd prefer the orange. But oh well. |
