CJ Cherryh Retiring

I'm not quite sure where to put this, so Admins should feel free to move as appropriate. CJ Cherryh, one of my all time favourite SFF authors, has announced that she will not be writing any further books.
Spoiler:
Quote:
Dear readers and friends. The unhappy fact is---the numerous bouts of anaesthetic I've had have made it pretty well impossible for me to write. I drop stitches. Not many. No problems with daily life or doing creative stuff or enjoying life in general. But the ability to control narrative is just not what it was, and it's just not going to be there. I've accepted that, painful as it is. I thank all of you who've stood by me patiently. The body of work is what it is, and I am lastingly grateful to my publisher, Betsy Wollheim, who has given me every extension of time and resource. And of course to Jane, who is all things.

I am saddened by this, but also understanding. I've been dealing with similar issues due to some medication that I've been on for 6 months, with no immediate end in sight.

That's sad. I don't read a lot of sci-fi, but Downbelow Station has been on my TBR list for a long time now. I'll push it to the front of the list.

Sad, yes, but unfortunately stuff happens, to writers just like to any other people.

At least she told her readers outright, instead of just leaving them dangling.

We're very grateful to her for her many, many interesting books. I've read several of them and planning to read more. I still have a lot of unread books by her.

She's given us plenty of great books.

I loved the Alliance/Union stuff, but kind of lost my place and dropped off the more recent Foreigner sequence. Way back before I had my spreadsheets.

I wish her earlier books had better availabliity in the UK. (I'm pretty sure they used to be avaiable via SF Gateway, but that deal seems to have ended, so it's possibly on me for not getting them when I could.)

I'm still on Downbelow Station (on working days I don't get long readings), the real only thing I don't like in it is the translation, full of syntax and typing errors; not sure if it's a translator's or editor's lack.
By reading Wikipedia, imho it would be interesting to watch also the graphic novels made by her - lately - wife, from hers novels (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Fancher)
The site is old, so I don't expect to be correct (but, I love those light pages): https://janefancher.com/htmfiles/bib.../GoI/Ivrel.htm

Edit: my only guess about the syntax errors might be that as the edition I'm reading was published in february 1982, while the novel was premiered on Hugo, but didn't already had the win nomination, and while it was published in 1981, the translation and the edits were made more quickly than usual (?); the others books from the serie (Libra Editrice, "Slan!" collections) don't seem to have had those issues.

But Penric is by Lois McMaster Bujold, not CJ Cherryh.

Although, maybe CJ Cherryh will "retire" similar to how Bujold has - still writing some stories but at her own pace. Although, from the tone of the article that seems unlikely.

That reminds me that I have the Easton Press autographed, Leather Bound edition of Downbelow Station in storage, in one of my numerous sell boxes.

I haven't read it, though, so maybe I'll pick up a Kindle or Kobo edition and see it I can get into it.

I've never read Cherryh, though maybe I should now that the universe is closed.

I will say, however, that if I haven't retired by the time I'm 83, my wife would have fits.
