Cover grid scrolling becomes laggy when scrolling quickly in large libraries
I have been experiencing scroll lag in the cover grid since version 9. Everything works fine with "slow scroll", but if I scroll too quickly, for example using the freewheel mode on an MX Master mouse, the cover grid starts to stutter.
The issue seems to happen when cover images are still loading. As I scroll quickly, the covers appear slowly and fill the screen with a delay. If I scroll past them before they finish loading, there are still blank spaces or "holes" when I scroll back up. Once I slowly scroll up and down enough for all the covers to load, scrolling becomes smooth again no matter the speed. However, after restarting, updating, or for some other reason, the problem comes back and the scrolling is laggy again. This was not a problem for me before version 9. I also do not think it is very noticeable with smaller libraries. My main library has over 6000 books, and I see the issue there a lot. In my secondary library (about the same size), I do see many images loading, but the scrolling itself does not feel as choppy so thats a mystery. But maybe book sizes or formats or metadata or even cover image sizes play a role? My system specs are: CPU: Intel i5-13600K, RAM: 32 GB Is there anything I can do to improve this? Are there any settings, cache options, or other tweaks that might help with cover grid performance in larger libraries? |

I suspect big libraries exceed the allowed (setting) thumbnails.

Anyway, I increased "Number of screenfulls" from the default to 100, and "Maximum amount of disk space" from the default to 5000 MB. At that point, the current space used was 938 MB. After restarting, the problem came back. I then decided to delete the cache, and that seems to have fixed it. Scrolling is no longer choppy for now. The current space used is 520 MB. |
