Books, Comics, Graphic Novels adaptions

While looking at movies that are adaptions from a novel, or graphic novel, I've found this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_..._feature_films

If might interest to comment or report some you want to mention, feel free to do it.

I don't watch many, the ones I can recall are:

Dune, by David Lynch (1984)
Stalker, by Andrei Tarkovsky (1979)
Hard to be a God, by Aleksei German (2013) >> didn't watched the 1989 film by Peter Fleischmann.
The Lord of the Rings, by Raph Bakhi (1978)
The Hobbit, by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass (1977)
Blade Runner, by Ridley Scott (1982)
Blade Runner 2049, by Denis Villeneuve (2017)
Imho nice ones even the mini short-animated series like Blade Runner Black Out 2022
Blame!, by Hiroyuki Seshita (2017)
*didn't yet read the mangas, but I guess all the works from Hayao Miyazaki are masterpieces.

Amazon Prime did a premiere serie TV for "Tales from the Loop", from the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag; the episodes had different directors and I'd watched only some, which I didn't liked much.
Netflix did a film from his "The Electric State" in 2025,
Quote:
With a reported budget of $320 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made.
Netflix and Amazon seems to be what the great cinema was once, not always the results are great, btw.

Perfect Blue, by Satoshi Kon (1997)
Batman Ninja, by Junpei Mizusaki (2018)
Quote:
In its American release, writers Leo Chu and Eric Garcia have admitted to rewriting the film from the original Japanese script written by Kazuki Nakashima, ultimately making two very different versions of the same film.
Also worth to mention, from Leigh Brackett:
Quote:
She also worked on an early draft of The Empire Strikes Back (1980), elements of which remained in the film; she died before it went into production.
Cemetery Man, by Michele Soavi (1994, from the "Dylan Dog" comics).
In here we had an animated serie from "La Pimpa", by Francesco Tullio Altan.
Spoiler:
Dubs:
Code:
Albanian
Arabic
Catalan
Cimbrian
Czech
Pimpa, English
French
Friulian
German
Greek
Hebrew
Hungarian
Japanese
Ladin
Mocheno
Norwegian
Persian
Romanian
Sardinian
Scottish Gaelic
Serbian
Slovene
Swedish
Spanish (Spain)
Venetain

Where the source material and film landed perfectly for me:
No Country for Old Men
Being There
A Clockwork Orange
The Cider House Rules
Apocalypse Now / Heart of Darkness
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
2001
Solaris (the Tarkovsky adaptation, although the remake was fine)

My runners up are The Long Goodbye, Jaws, The Godfather, The Shining and Blade Runner (perfect films, good but slightly lesser books). And American Psycho, The Road, Sin City, and Watchmen (perfect books, good but slightly lesser films).

No mention of one of my favourite movies: The Thin Man, novel and movie have the same titel.

Wikipedia also has a list of plays that were turned into "American films" (do they mean just the US or all states of both Americas?): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catego...based_on_plays

This was an original screenplay, not an adaption from a novel. As far as I am aware, no novel has yet been released for this movie. There are 3 sequels to the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by K.W. Jeter, but their story lines are completely different to the movie.

In my 695 book library, I have 140 books that have been migrated to the big screen. Too many to list here.

As for some books that I personally rate highly that have screen adaptions (whether good or bad), I include these not already mentioned above...

The Host
Harry Potter
Multiple novels by John Grisham
Multiple novels by Michael Crichton
The Martian
The 5th Wave
The Expanse
THHGTTG
The Hunger Games series
Jack Reacher
Murderbot
Silo
Cormoran Strike series
City of Ember

Thanks to anyone, because there are a lot of hints so far to watch for.
@Karellen, true: the ones you mentioned are "based on" and not a direct adaption from the book. "Batman Ninja" also I guess it's an adaption.
"The Lord of the Rings" by Raph Bakhi follows only the first two books, it doesn't has the third one onto its plot.

@rowe: "Ghost in the Shell" are fantastic both the anime and the movie adaptions, not to mention the standalone sequel "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence", so full of details and colors even when scenes are moving really fast.
Quote:
The story is loosely based on Ghost in the Shell manga chapter "Robot Rondo" (with elements of "Phantom Fund").
(didn't read this latter one, btw)
Spoiler:
listed as cult films, too.

The Sky Crawlers also is based on a manga (didn't read) and it's a nice animated movie, imho.
Immortal, (or Immortel, ad vitam), a movie co-written and directed by Enki Bilal, based on his comic book "La Foire aux immortels" (The Carnival of Immortals).
Spoiler:
Quote:
The final chapter, Froid Équateur, was chosen book of the year by the magazine Lire and is acknowledged by the inventor of chess boxing, Iepe Rubingh, as the inspiration for the sport.

Not watched it in a very long time. But I preferred the Ghost in the Shell TV series 'Stand Alone Complex' to the sequels.

'2001
This was also an original screenplay, and a novel based on the screenplay was released shortly after the movie release.'

The novel and screenplay were developed concurrently over three years. They started with the intent of writing the novel first – using the short story The Sentinel as a seed – but the process became a constant feedback loop. The first draft of the novel was finished a year before filming had begun.
