What about BAEN? Are we renting or buying? I know they don't use DRM.

Eh, who cares what the legalese says. I buy an ebook, it's mine and I do what I want with it (short of sharing it with other people). End of story. Does that make me an immoral, oath-breaking villain? Possibly. Yawn.

Hey, I like it. It's straightforward and simple. With no pointless, clapped-out, agenda-pushing analogies to contend with.

It's ebook hoarders and not. My husband buys from Amazon, never bothers removing DRM, reads in the app on his Boox, and then he's done with it. I mostly buy from Kobo, remove DRM, save local and cloud copies, and read on my Nook. Later I can read, re-read, or at least refer to books I have backed up using whatever device. Back when my main ereader was a Kobo, I removed DRM from Kobo books solely for backup copies. I just read the kepubs, as they were -- with DRM or not, downloaded directly to my Kobo.

They don’t need to. As with all piracy out there, their source is very likely not the retail product. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to find the media before it is released.

These days it IS mostly the retail product. Most KU books found on pirate sites were converted from KFX, so clearly pulled from eink Kindles or Kindle apps. Yes, I checked.

You are really buying the format file, which, on some or most cases, is proprietary?

The case for this thread topic is that it wasn't non common.

Btw, for what I read about, it's not like if an author starts whitin Amazon Exclusive, will remain there forever: e.g. "The Martian" by Andy Weir:
Quote:
Having been rebuffed by literary agents when trying to get prior books published, Weir decided to put the book online in serial format one chapter at a time for free at his website. At the request of fans, he made an Amazon Kindle version available at 99 cents (the minimum allowable price he could set).[9] The Kindle edition rose to the top of Amazon's list of best-selling science-fiction titles, selling 35,000 copies in three months, more than had been previously downloaded free.[9][11] This garnered the attention of publishers: Podium Publishing, an audiobook publisher, signed for the audiobook rights in January 2013. Weir sold the print rights to Crown in March 2013 for over US$100,000.

Going from self-published to getting traditionally published and selling movie rights is a relatively rare occurrence.

Also writing something just decent, being on the middle of thousand of crappy AI novels won't help imho.

Yup, I actually like the show better than the books. But again, something most authors can only dream of whether self-pubbed or traditional.
