Don't. Chances are you won't be able to use it for DRM removal.

I have bought both a Voyage and an Oasis 3 recently on eBay, plus my three Paperwhite 5th gen’s came from eBay. All of them are fine and have been used for DRM removal. I have bought and sold numerous e-readers on eBay over the years and never had any issues.

It's not a question of DRM removal now, but DRM removal after 20th May, when presumably Amazon will have rolled out their new DRM scheme to all the Kindles they still support.

I don't mean that eBay is an issue, the issue is that Amazon is actively disabling DRM removal on all Kindle models.

I understand that risk for both those devices.

Apologies, I thought you were referring to the risk of blacklisted devices on eBay.

Given the fact that even the Kindle 11th generation, just one generation before the present day model, does not get software updates anymore, I would advise against buying anything but the latest generation.

As long as Amazon does not change its trade-in policy you can get a 20% discount on a new Kindle when you trade-in your old one. And this discount can be combined with Black Friday or Prime Day or any other discounts. So if you want to purchase a new Kindle you should be patient.

The OP wants to buy a Kindle for DRM removal, not for reading.

When the download embargo takes place, I'm going to fill the space on my PW3 and see if I can still remove DRM. I've not had DRM on since after Amazon announced D&T going away and D&T actually being gone. When I did, I was able to download and remove the DRM. I'll see if filling the space helps.

Therefore (the way I see it), I suggest all Kindle owners work on that Wish List by either buying from that list before May 20th or deciding the books aren't worth purchasing.

That's what I've been doing.

I’ve been downloading available updates while I still can.

This whole thing is push comes to shove by Amazon.

Supposedly most customers don't care much about DRM, but it would be interesting to know how many customers do, that Amazon are now going to lose as a customer. That is, aside from those who will give in and tolerate DRM, as I am sure a good number will.

But I suspect there has been attrition going on for some time, with many customers either partly or fully migrating to Kobo. So Amazon aren't going to miss me much, as I have been buying most of my ebooks at Kobo for a few years now. That factor, by many of us, may have contributed to this latest bad behavior by Amazon.

I kept using Amazon a little due to some authors, but for many years Amazon's behavior has just continued to annoy, and my angst build, and so while I regret the impact on some authors, who feel they need Kindle Unlimited for exposure, it will be a great pleasure, a sigh of relief, to finally give up on Amazon.

I certainly won't be recommending Amazon or Kindle for ebooks and ereader devices, and suggest the OP just goes cold turkey like many of us.
