Amazon and DRM changes

So far I've only seen 5.16.2.1.1 reported and of course 5.18.5 and up. A mention that 5.12.2.2 stopped working, but no confirming log.

Can Kindle for Android be sideloaded to an Android TV? I couldn't find it by searching on my TV. It's just an idea I want to play with and maybe try reading on it. What if you could sideload the app and access downloaded books from there? Maybe xfr to USB w/a file explorer or access the TV from a PC? Would Blue Stacks work again? Would you even need it?

I tried to sideload Kindle to my Android TV way back (Onn 4K box 2021). I never got it to work back then.

The Pocketbook app worked fine though and was available in the Android TV store.

Well. This is interesting. I have a PW2 (6 gen, firmware 5.12.2.2.2). Several hours ago, I received 3 books on it, all published in 2024. All KFX. All added to Calibre, but showing as KFX-ZIP still. I can download the metadata, but I can't read them with the viewer.

Comments and suggestions? KFX Input is up to date as is Calibre.

I am assuming you were previously able to remove drm in the past?

Sad to say...you may now be infected with new drm.

There is a github discussion that was opened by a user with a 5.12.2.2.2 device and logs suggest it has the same new drm as 5.16.2.1.1 devices got infected with. (It was apparently done via some diagnostics code so was sideloaded or activated in such a way that it did not require a firmware update.)

Yes, 5.12.2.2 is getting the updated KFX DRM now too. Haven't heard any issues yet with Voyage 5.13.6 or the 10th gen Kindles on 5.18.1 and 5.18.2, but I imagine it will happen to them as well.

eta: As previously mentioned, all the recent Kindles which have updated to 5.18.5 and higher have stopped working with DeDRM as well.

do we know if any one had a jailbroken 5.16.2.1.1. or now 5.12.2.2 device with updates disabled? in other words, does jailbreaking prevent the sneaky drm update?

just curious. my 11th gen PW5 is jailbroken with ota updates disabled (it's on 5.18.3) and my 10th gen Oasis is now jailbroken also (5.18.2). of course I'm still worried about the updated drm being injected. does having ota updates disabled offer any protection from the sneaky updated drm?

My guess is that if your Kindle is infected with the new DRM, after you jailbreak, you may have to downgrade the firmware in order to remove the infection.

And supposedly, if you reset your Kindle, you get may get rid of the infection until the next time Amazon uploads it.

I can confirm that downgrading did *not* get rid of the "new" DRM on my Oasis 2 with 5.16.2.2

I downgraded to the 5.16.2.1 and was still not able to sanitize a book. I did NOT try doing a factory reset, but will try that next.

Once you've backed off the jailbreak and did a full reset and then applied the jailbreak and the OTA block, then you hopefully will be able to find out if you can remove the DRM.

I'm interested to know how it all goes.

My PW3 has not been infected with the new DRM as I've had it in airplane mode since just before D&T was removed. But before I remove airplane mode, I want to know if the OT block would work to keep the new DRM away. However, because I have to turn on WiFi to jailbreak would I get infected and thus the OTA block would not matter. But if I don't download anything before doing all of this, could a slip through the cracks and not get infected?

Did a full reset, filled the Kindle so that there is only 70 MB free, then registered it, and downloaded a book that I hadn't been able to clean before, and am now able to.

Note that at this point I haven't yet re-applied the jailbreak. When I connected the Kindle back to my PC after registering and downloading the book from Amazon, there was a .bin.partial file that showed up on the device. I deleted it.

That's a good idea to fill up the space on my PW3 and see what happens when I try to download form Amazon. I'll try this once my Kindle Touch no longer can download.

Still, I would (and will) make sure to only turn on wifi on that device long enough to download the book you bought, and check for the .bin.partial file when you plug it in. If it's there, delete it right away before you do anything else.

I still have my Oasis 3 which is working for now to cleanse my books, and is one of the ones that is in my main reading rotation. It is good to know, though, that if that or my Voyage are ever cut off I still have an option.
