Learning how to use tag mapper
Hey, everyone! I'm trying to figure out how to use the tag mapper tool in Calibre. I'm confused how this works, and didn't see anything about it specifically in the Calibre documentation.
First question: Does the tag mapper have to run as a process at ebook file import, or do the tag mapper rules take effect dynamically after I create said rules? Second: Is this the correct setting to split the tag "Young Adult Fiction" into the two tags "Young Adult" and "Fiction" or am I misunderstanding things? I'm assuming the use of a comma denotes a second tag? Thanks for the help, friends. Hope you're faring well in this wacky world. |

I do not use this feature so I may be off
Look at the text. It says applies to... , so that implies this is no for use only during import As to #2 This has always bugged me that folk need to tag things that can be inferred. If it ain't non-fiction, what else could it be? Fiction.Science fiction seems really redundant YMMV And there are non-fiction subjects that have no fiction counter part . Fiction.Ford F-series owners manual (OTOH F-150 repair might be wishful )There are subjects that do need the distinction, So in those cases I WOULD use them as hierarchical. BUT subject.fiction, subject.non-fiction or subject.<subcategory> Are you looking for Fiction or are you looking for a topic that is non-fiction? Can you see my logic. Young adult is a filter, not a topic |

I figured out the tag splitting settings btw. I didn't see the "test" button in the tag mapper window before posting, but after using it I confirmed that my settings for "Young Adult Fiction" does in fact split it into two tags. Now all I'm wondering is if these rules affect files only at import, or retroactively. |

You can add Tag Mapper to a toolbar or menu. I don't use it but I assume it will apply the rules to selected books when it's used.

If you want to run them at import time do so via Preferences->Adding books->Adding actions->Rules to filter tags
If you add the tag mapper to a toolbar then you can run the rules anytime you like on the currently selected books, IIRC. |

Also, it took me some time to figure out that the tag mapper process was being run. Thank you for explaining that a bit. It isn't super clear to the user that by clicking the OK button in the tag mapper window, you're actually running the process. There's also no confirmation dialogue that the tags were mapped. I only figured out that's how it works after messing up a bunch of tags in some files, and watching for the changes. Maybe changing the OK button to RUN, or something like that should be considered. Edit: I was mistaken. I see now that the two tag rule lists are saved together. I was looking in the "rules to filter added files" by mistake. My import tag rules are all set now.
